You tell the farmer that you'd like the food and the apprentice. He frowns. "If we're giving you food for free, our profits will suffer; if we want to stay afloat, we'll need our son around to help out." He pauses. "Unless he'll be able to help us from your tower—by conjuring rain?"

You shake your head; his face falls. "The kind of magic you need takes a fairly long time to learn, unfortunately. I expect it would take a year to teach him rain-conjuring, if not more."

He shrugs. "Then you'll have to pick one or the other."

Well, you don't really need either one. Food is hardly a colossal expense, even if you have no steady source of income, and you're really not ready to take on an apprentice.

...Though the costs of living do add up over time, and you haven't made any money, yet. Weather-magic is rather profitable, so you really shouldn't have any trouble earning some, but... you've already spent a rather large chunk of your savings.
