I just played this for the first time yesterday before going to bed. Ended up playing with someone named Liz as the captain and we did about 2-3 missions with some people dropping in and out of the server occasionally. He claimed that it was the most successful pickup game he's had, so I guess that's a good sign? I was expecting everyone to be really trolling and screwing stuff up.

This game gets a rep for being full of griefers, I think its because if there is 9 players and 1 griefer, the griefer spoils the game for 9 persons and everyone will leave with the sense of "yeah, full of griefers". In my limited experience, it is not really hard to find a group of randoms for a good game without trolling or griefing. My tips:

1. Join only servers tagged as Serious or Roleplay.

2. Stick to low player count servers - large number of players on a server give the troll a sense of anonymity. I found that on low player servers the teamwork is much tighter and personal.

3. Join the game before the round starts and chat with everybody - griefers don't want to talk, they will prompt to start the game as soon as possible, when asked questions, they will usually leave.

4. Don't join servers with respawn enabled, griefers want to grief repeatedly.

5. If you don't find a server with these settings, start your own, it may take a short while till the first player joins, the rest of the lobby fills quickly.

No, you have to pick a server to join or host your own.

I also got it with humble bundle, but I went into it a bit and its like ss13 lite/submarine edition and thats quite fun.

I mostly play prisoner transport, where (if players are up to it) the prisoners have to escape and the crew has to get the prisoners to the end of the map without them all dieing - chaos happens inbetween mostly.

When I played I got more Guns of Icarus vibes, but that just might be because everyone was cooperating and working towards an objective.

Is multiplayer viable without owning a microphone? I can listen fine, but I don't do mics for various reasons.

Totally. There are many advantages to text-chat over mic in this game. For one, you don't have to be worried about being drowned out by the other mics or the in-game notices. Secondly, your message remains in the log for everyone to see. It doesn't disappear as soon as you stop talking

There's also a robust quick-notification system. When I play, I use both text and Mic.

Thanks. I'll probably end up spending some time with single player first to learn the ropes. (And I'm kind of hooked on various mod-factions for total warhammer 2 right now, so may have trouble pulling myself away at the moment.)
