Underground trade routes

So, we know that the dwarven caravan can return from the fort to the mountainhome via the caverns.

Why not use the same strategy to travel to the fort?

The caravan is presently a placeholder awaiting the introduction of actual caravans that actually exist once they have left the map.

They could still appear in constructed tunnels (that is, the ones that were there before you embarked, which presumably go somewhere) without requiring a huge update.

Adding to caravan functions would involve fixing them first (disappearing caravans, merchant citizens on retire, etc). Often fixing stuff due to be replaced gets put aside so I suspect we're just going to have to wait until real merchants are introduced.

You never know, Toady might suddenly feel they're needed to improve artifact mobility around the world. We can but hope.
