It is for a little while that the insistent tugging inside them doesn't lead anywhere, just to walking along the desolate road and desolate cityscape (and in Aoi's case gaping into every nook and cranny). But eventually, their flight does lead to something. And when it does lead to something, the pair stumble into a whole lot at once. The sounds give them some warning that something is going on, sounds of rapid movement, but nothing could possibly ever prepare them for precisely what they see.
Two things hover in the air, unimaginably monstrous things. They... they are like hovering spheres about three feet in diameter, bobbing lightly on a nonexistent breeze, the way they tilt and turn like they were on a slowly wavy beach rather than in the middle of the air. These creatures are garishly patterned, white and black stripes across their bodies in a rather hypnotic fashion, with a blue mask sunk into their surfaces, masks almost like very forlorn theater masks. It's when the impossible monsters turn around that their most horrifying aspect is revealed: giant mouths stretch across the whole width of their bodies, with no eyes or nose to match. These mouths almost look human, with big lips the color of red lipstick, and flat teeth that would look human enough if they weren't the size of a thumb... but hanging from each mouth is a giant tongue, length of an arm, width of two, and jet black.
Behind the two monsters, now running away towards a parking building in the distance, is the grey-cloaked figure from their dreams, beating feet from the scene with an odd gait... and Kanade over its shoulder! And just like that, as they take in the scene, the tugging disappears.
But even with these monsters facing them, the two have the oddest certainty that they know what to do, a sudden knowledge that something resides within them, a solid, certain word that rises to their lips: Persona.
