In all my games so far, I have never found coal. Where can I expect to? (I haven't looked much beyond the chasm, if that's where it's normally found)

It's in the place you arn't looking; between the chasm and the lava river.

Just be careful how you use it though, the amount of coal you find could be the last amount in the mountain.

If you're trying to be careful and happen to be plenty lucky, you could try digging all the way north and south and find the ends of the chasm. You might be able to find a bit of coal just beyond there without having to actually cross the chasm, but it takes a bit of luck and you won't get a great deal of coal out of it.

I've never found coal all that usefull.  It takes 1 fuel to make 1 coal.   You do make a proffit at it, but it's only slightly better than wood, and so hard to find.  I really wish you got maybe 3 coke rather than 2 from it to make it worth while a little more.

heck, usually by the time I find coal, I've found the lava and free fuel !
