Oooh. I consider myself very lucky for having found this.

Xantalos volunteers as a test subject for any scientist, if there happen to be openings.

With my track record of how weird science shit and I interact, I daresay I'd be a prize asset to any aspiring supergenius!

Hey, I've got an opening, I think. The guy who was my volunteer spontaneously teleported to another dimension.

On the plus side, you won't have to worry about funeral costs. Best of luck as my replacement.

20 days until deadline.

I would recommend start applying any technologies requiring training from user on your soldier, especially if they are "safe". Such as extra limbs, alternative body forms and such. Soldiers aren't as fast learners as you are. Though you still don't need to hurry that, I'll probably add simulated week or two after this month to give soldiers opportunity to get used their new equipment. And to ensure scientist can have replacement parts ready when their hard work gets inevitably totally trashed in combat.

Automatic research

You quickly finish the remote controlled exoskeleton in its basic implementation so you can focus on correcting the quantum brain. Figuring the root cause of memory degradation takes too many hours, but ultimately you triumph over the hardships and fully understand the problem. With this you can tomorrow make changes on your production machinery and then continue with improving the overall function. Like finishing the emotions and minimizing the quantum brain even more compact.

Quote from: Egan_BW
Automatic research

The way to get rid of the last problem, consciousness, lies within various forms of brain damage and coma. Creatively cutting neuron connections here and there, and killing these few neurons here ensures the brain can never wake up as a person again. Next you take your MMI, make modifications and apply them on the brains. Voilá, slave brain array! Well, of course you also build the computer that acts as intermediary between master and slaves.

Next part is prepping the master brain for its new role. You also may want to make a brain-in-a-jar technology so you don't have to keep entire array of now useless bodies.

I kind of assumed it would be obvious that what I'm trying to discover by messing about with the mice is how Terrible Glory works without extreme human casualties, but point taken, I'll state intended research goals in the future.

Although, mind you, the whole point of the killer electrode in the heart was to keep the brain in a good state for later examination.

From here on in, Terrible Glory and its components will have new, catchier designations:
  • TG - the system as a whole.
  • TG-B - the brain-to-brain communicator module.
  • TG-R - the receiver module.
  • TG-T - the teleporter module.

OPERATION: MOUSEWATCH 2016 concluded, result: TG successfully analyzed, further studies branch out into HOMEGROWN and WE HAVE WAYS. Mouse subjects to be held until

OPERATION: GARDEN OF DELIGHTS concluded, result: motivation has no significant effect on withstanding horrible death, must modify TG to be less hazardous.

OPERATION: HOMEGROWN

Research goal: growing more exact model objects to study TG with.

Step One: leverage my working theory of neural design and manipulation to fashion a sort of neuronal test bed - brain matter without a brain that readily connects with a computer, electrodes and miniature chemostats to, in effect, get a feel for what a given module requires as input and actually outputs in a system. Ensure the system is compatible with a wide range of imaging technologies.

Step Two: as a test case, see if I can build such a Homegrown© receptacle for Terrible Glory's receiver module, and link it to a dummy module (where the teleporter module normally would be) that produces a readout of any signals received.

OPERATION: WE HAVE WAYS

Research goal: dissect and understand the principles by which TG-T operates.

Step One: overwriting the laws of physics, you say? Time for intense deconstruction. First question: what is the input? And don't say willpower, desire or the power of the mind, because none of those actually contain any form of meaningful information (at least not to me - perhaps my theory encompasses such things quite well - notify me if this is the case). Do they take neuronal input, and what kind if so?

I'll give you extra progress roll as an apology. Which didn't really help that much.

OPERATION: HOMEGROWN

The thing about these more complex modules which operate outside of accepted laws of physics is that they cannot be fully selfcontained. They are extremely specialized cogs that must be part of a complex system. And as such your test bed have to be a functional brain. Mouse brain will do for that purpose, but bigger brains would be preferred. Studying effects of different modules requires working the computer connection case by case basis, but you figure to do what you to make the progress as fluid as possible. And because you are feeling lazy, you don't finish the test bed today.

OPERATION: WE HAVE WAYS

Your theory does some work explaining this, but it is more focused pracital work, how to archieve desired effects and decoding neural connections. As stated earlier, these... reality ignoring modules require a mind as a backbone. How to say it, mind is not just neurons and synapses firing, it's more than that. These neural systems known as brains provide a host for it, a medium of kind. So altering the medium, adding new patterns, can produce these unusual effects. These modules of yours are just a part of it, like a additional program in a computer. Yeah, that's probably a good way to put it. Mind is the hardware and brain is the program. Although that's not perfect description either. I'm not quite clear about this either.

So the actual question: how does mind overwrite laws of physics? Your theory doesn't really answer that other than "it can do it if it has proper outlet. Here's how you can make these outlets".

In the back of my mind I was just starting to think about modified creatures designed for non-combat purposes, but wow, my muse has really outdone herself here. I choose some subjects to turn into these earthworm-like support creatures, then begin the process of growing the combat bodies.

If I have time left, I begin researching additional biological capabilities that could be added to the combat bodies. I'm thinking poison spines, improved vision and light perception (those were some cool shrimp), perhaps even infrared/EM perception... though new senses could be overwhelming. I'll have to test that out on human subjects first.

I was wondering if I could turn your lab into something like this.

The alteration virus is finished suprisingly quickly. You are getting good at this. And you do have pretty good equipment to make these things happen, thanks to your earlier work, though they could be more... clinical in appearance. You pick six bodies for harvesting, two for each of your combat bodies. First you give them most balanced and heaviest meal you can arrange. They are going to need all that energy before reformation is over. You carefully remove limbs, spine, brain and all other superfluous organs. Heart gets electrodes to keep it pumping until autonomous system reforms. Your virus is injected and organ bags are wrapped up in leftover fat and skin. They should be fully effective tomorrow. Probably.

Making the first cell for each of combat bodies is... well you are probably better off grabbing a stem cells from some test subjects are rewriting their chromosomes using usual methods. You get code for Codename Tarantula done and halfway through Codename Brutus.

You will always have time for other projects if you choose to work in parallel. But from your wording it seems you are fan of sequential work. Works for me.

By the way, how big are those combat bodies of yours? It makes difference in how fast they grow.

PS. Some of your assistants are starting to get cold feet. You hear rumor someone has request to be reassigned somewhere else.

Find out who toppled the dice shrine in the rec room. Make them write out "I will not anger random Elder Gods by destroying the shrine in the rec room" in crayon on the ceiling of the rec room, 6d6+6 times.

Then rebuild the shrine.

Nobody admits, so you pick somebody randomly. Dice rolls 4, 6, 1, 4, 3 and 2, so you make him write it 26 times.

You fail to rebuild it in its original glory on top of single die. You end up using two dice as a base. It's good, but not as awesome as it should be.

OPERATION: HOMEGROWN

Step Three: obtain apes. Practice placing them in comas, and filling their brains with electrodes to ensure possibilities for selective stimulation. The idea is to design a system where I control the inputs and outputs for a module externally, and modulate neural activity as I see fit beyond the necessary baseline.

OPERATION: WE HAVE WAYS

Question of the day: what is the input that goes into TG-T, and what is the output? Neurons are clearly attached to it - what do they do? That is what I aim to understand. You can talk all day about emergent phenomena and other bullshit like that, but at the end of the day a signal comes in, and a signal comes out. What we need to find out here specifically is what these signals appear to be from what we've discovered in scanning mouse brains, and if these signals are insufficient, how exactly TG communicates with the rest of the mind.

I could use braincases, yes, but the more potentially interesting way is to allow the slave brains to still have motor control, allowing the master to remote-control them.

Hooray!

To be a useful volunteer, spend most of my time unless otherwise stated doing willpower-enhancing exercises with whatever the Company will give me to that purpose. If that means meditating while tuning myself out from copious amounts of porn playing in the background or repeatedly forming small habits and weaning myself out of them, go ahead. Doc George is doing mind stuff, right?

Also try to assist the Doc with motivation and keeping him relatively healthy should he for some reason go on some insane drug-fuelled mad science bender or something. Be supportive and all that jazz.

I don't know if the "fleshy hellscape" aesthetic is the ideal environment to facilitate my research... but it does remind me of a recurring dream I've been having lately. Potentially not a bad idea.

As for the combat bodies' sizes, when fully grown:
Chimera should be about 250 pounds
Tarantula should be about 400 pounds
Brutus should be about 550 pounds

So I finish Brutus and get it and Tarantula growing before I start on Chimera's cell (Brutus being highest priority). If I finish Chimera's first cell, then I get it into its growth tank as well. If I complete that, then I start working on biological defense mechanisms. I'm thinking of splitting my research on extra body functions into two focuses - one would be hostile defense mechanisms like a jellyfish's stinging cells, while the other focus would be on improved perception, like magnetic field perception (even salmon do it) and echolocation.

I also request that the Company send me assistants with a better work ethic. This isn't some goddamn summer job you can quit because you get tired after a few weeks. We are forging the future of humanity.

Hmm. Well, the problem with memory degration is now fixed. With new parts installed the quantum brain loads and boots up new brain data perfectly. Initial reactions from the subject seem very much same as the first time.

I could use braincases, yes, but the more potentially interesting way is to allow the slave brains to still have motor control, allowing the master to remote-control them.

It is theoretically possible with additional alterations. Perhaps afterwards. For now you focus on creating yet another version of MMI interface solely for interfacing with extra brains for computational power, data storing and retrieval, brainstorming ideas and distributing mental work on them, effectively increasing one's ability to focus on multiple things. Quality of slaved brains makes a great difference in this system, smarter, more experienced, more knowledgeable subjects are far superiour compated to avarage joe from streets. But such quality brains are hard to come by and most often are missed if they mysteriously disappear.

Tests show that subject assigned as master performs much better than his peers, if slightly delirious from suprise brain surgery and assault by variety of tests.

Trying to ignore 24/7 porn channel on large TV and loud speakers is truly the greatest challenge of will. You fail. I mean, look at those! How flexible!

All those memory test papers are left untouched. Except not really all of them, if you catch my meaning...

Suprising amount of fuckups prevents you from completing your test bed. Fingers trembling at the wrong moment, causing death of thousands neurons, electrode sticking too deep and so on. Perhaps you should skip your morning coffee. Or drink more.

OPERATION: WE HAVE WAYS

Input is coordinates and shape. For source and target. Encoded as sequence of parallel pulses. Output is signals pulsing back and forth within TG-T until transportation event happens. You mostly understand it. Mostly. Almost enough to make use of it. But not in any way that would help you make teleporting machine based on conventional science.

It's not my fault you are having these dreams.

Your... nutrinent generators finish their transformation. Each having a set of hungry mouths constantly chewing and extra breathing hole like dolphins do. You give orders to feed them most balanced food possible, actually you write down a list of various food types and strict schedule about what must be fed when, 24/7. It doesn't take long before they start dripping viscous goo into tanks. It doesn't look very edible or anything you would like to put in your mouth, but technically it is most efficient type of food one could hope to have. Full of nutrients in very easily absorbable form and not a single thing body cannot use.

That done you return building your monster builders. Vision clearly in the mind and steady hands tempered with experience you finish the viruses in record time. You obtain few live human cells from closest source (your skin), insert virus in each under microscope and watch how it does it work. Fantastic. Few drops of nutrient goo and the altered cells start dividing like crazy. Job well done, you can give yourself a pat on shoulders. You carry each of the growing masses on their own tank and let them grow there on their own pace.

With little time left you set out to figure new ways to make unarmored people's life more miserable. ((I treat those two new research lines as active studies which will have change to produce something good every turn in addition of stated example goals.))

Your agent promises to perform workplace satisfaction survey and perhaps move people around.

Wonder if the Company is preparing for a war against the pointy-eared and glowy-red-nosed super-armies of Santa Claus.

Spoiler: Activities (click to show/hide)

Probably not, unless Santa Claus is actually an alien. Most likely they are prepping up for war, but war against what? Will they take over the world? Fight against aliens? Extra dimensional incursion? Are they the side attacking or defending? Strict deadline indicates they are in hurry and war is about to happen soon. But single super soldier or even eight won't be enough to change course of war significantly (unless others have really outdone themselves). Of course if they hire everybody to combine technologies and streamline mass production, then they could outfit an army reasonably fast.

You could always ask. They won't kill or silence you for asking anytime soon, you are too valuable asset. But will they answer, that's another matter entirely.

Continue my efforts to strengthen my will by resisting porn/drugs/etc. Try to access meditation classes, like monks or something, maybe they can get me some Buddhist scripture so I can focus on the concept of nirvana/samsara/etc.

Keep offering whatever assistance I can to the Doc, maybe some of this'll give him inspiration.
Not the porn though, that probably wouldn't help.

Realize I've really no idea what should be sacrificed to a Random Number God. Write down the longest string of Fibonacci numbers I can from memory, and have an assistant burn it in effigy at the dice shrine. My current state qualifies as having taken brain damage, I'm allowed to make crazy requests. And burning long strings of predictable numbers should work, right?

OPERATION: HOMEGROWN

Step Four: Invest in robotic solutions for installing devices and applying treatments on comatose apes. We need something with maximum chances of success.

OPERATION: WE HAVE WAYS

Question 1 of the day: is it possible to create a teleportation event by applying appropriate signals to TG-T outside of a human brain, utilizing electrodes and microarrays of chemical release capsules?

Question 2 of the day: if we start looking for highly nontraditional signals (heat, gravitational waves, minor distortions in physical constants, that sort of thing), is it still impossible to find what exactly TG-R is communicating with?

OPERATION: ALL-SEEING EYE

Step Six: design a high-priority hivemind module, its owner's thoughts and desires taking high priority over those of the rest of the minds in a network.
