Consider that drafting people makes people unhappy. Therefore, increasing happiness better allows us to draft people as needed were as increasing the economy slightly will probably not put us in a position where we can afford mercenaries as easily as we could draft people.

B The economy will come or go but we do not want to be deposed like the king before our father.

Err, to poke the general consensus understanding, apparently drafting/hiring mercenaries (upon my assumptions) draws from both Happiness/Economy respectively, while adding around...2 points of Army. [So the wording of the early choices made it slightly seem like not recruiting is a bad idea but we've NEVER had our Army value go below 4, but all other values never rose past 4, other than Population.)

A tiny poke at what we can value more at the moment--happiness or Economy. Both have their own drawbacks, but we can shift to happiness since we DID heighten taxes and that still stands until the present.

B The economy will come or go but we do not want to be deposed like the king before our father.
Thank you \o/

You request that some of the Army is to be relieved and acquired money is to be spent on festivals.

"As you wish, my liege."

818 AD, Spring

'Friendly people' from Lametania report that the kingdom is having hard time (read: is getting its ass kicked) by invaders from further south, from a place called 'Damdamian Republic'. Ha, good for them!

...the heck is a Republic though?

818 AD, Mid-Spring

A particularily cold day, mysterious travelers appear at the gates of your castle. They are all fair-skinned, blonde haired, humans. Amongst them is a smaller, hooded figure. The castellan of the castle allows them entry and the group politely asks for an audience, and they are given one.

They say that they come from a distant land far to north and west, behind many mountains and dark forests. They seek shelter for their lady, a Princess, who hath lost a civil war and by the law of their people, is to be executed. However, her escape was possible and she fled for long time.

You assume it's the hooded person.

"We wish for our Princess only a good life and refuge from the unforgiving country that is our homeland. As we passed through your Kingdom, we heard that you, good King of this land, still do not have a wife. Please, will you accept her, a disgraced but noble young lady, as your wife?"

"That is absurd!" Your Queen Mother speaks suddenly. "My son will choose his wife, and he will surely not be interested in noblewoman who fell from grace. Marriage is to bring advantages for the Kingdom, or at least the family, not to please a bunch of strangers from nowhere!"

The advisor coughs.

"It will be His Majesty's decision, of course, but can we see this 'Princess'? As the sages say, 'one should not buy a cat in a bag'." The blonde men speak amongst themselves, and then, after giving a respectful bow to the hooded figure, pull her hood down. She has a fair skin, lovely blue eyes, soft pink lips and...

...are those pointed ears??

A) Witchcraft! Fanciful creatures! We already have problems with dwarves and hurthlings, we don't need elven nobles fleeing a civil war on top of that!
B) Tell them that you're not interested, but that they, and their Princess, can stay in your Kingdom for a while.
C) Happily accept this one-in-lifetime opportunity to have an exotic (and to be honest, quite pretty) bride!

Well, looks like not swiping a princess from the elves was a good idea in hindsight.

We might be able to get a minor claim to an Elven kingdom for our sons!  Sure beats messing around with stinky locals.

You eagerly accept such a beautiful bride!

"Romuald!" Queen Mother looks shocked and appalled, but she knows that she has no power over your decision - if she was still your regent, then yes, but not anymore.

"The Princess' name is Aolineniya, good King. Take care of her, and may the gods bless you for your kindness and hospitality." The Princess, who looks not more but few years older than you, approaches your throne and kneels before you in respect.

In less than a day, the rest of her group dissappears.

You marry the elven princess in a celebration that draws lotsa attention, for obvious reasons. Later, you are able to fully ascertain that your wife does indeed have a beautiful body!

818 AD, Summer

The advisor appears suddenly during your breakfast of eggs and sausage.

"My liege, sorry for the interruption, but something rather... unexpected happened. Your beloved wife was touring the Treasury, and when she found the dwarven scepter you bought from the westerners, she suddenly seized it, ran outside with a shriek and cast the prized artifact into the moat! She is currently in her bedroom, screaming that she didn't know we're 'friends of the death-bringers, the filthy dwarves'. The guards are currently searching the murky waters for the artifact."

Well this is awkward.

A) Talk with her about the whole issue.
B) Have her locked in her bedroom and warn her that such careless fits are unbecoming of a Queen.

A We bought that off another kingdom, not the dwarves. (Not that we didn't get something but those Lametanians nicked that.)

A.

Locking her up would only give our mother justification for not wanting us to marry her, so let's stick it to the man. Woman. Whatever.
