Machine Discussion
« on: October 30, 2007, 12:14:00 am »

I was playing around with the windmills a bit and it seems that I could get them to work to a certain depth. If I placed a vertical axle directly below the windmill's center, it began to draw power. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the power to go any lower, whether by putting a vertical axle directly below that axle  or by building a gear assembly to the side or below.

Has anyone gotten the windmill to transfer power down a long distance?

I had a windmill that showed powered, and I put an axle directly south of it. It didn't power up.

I had a watermill in a brook, entirely inside the brook. It didn't power.

I'm also curious how to get a pump to work...and can you build pipes?

It looks like you need to dig out the floor (i.e. a c{h}annel) underneath where the vertical axle is going to go in order for it to connect to the next layer down.

Nope, just build a gear assembly below the center tile of the windmill.  Works perfectly for me  :)

Yes, one level below (i.e. Z-1) the windmill works without any changes.  However, if you want to go lower than that (e.g. Z-2), you need to knock out the floor on Z-1.

Hmm...  That wiki page says you have to build the windmill first, but I don't think that's true.  In fact, if you put a gear assembly on the ground (Z=0), and then build a ramp and a wall so that you can get up to the next level (Z=+1), you can build the windmill with only the gear assembly for support (it shows up as "hanging") and power is delivered to the gear assembly just fine.
 - FW

code:

Z=0                          Z=1

.R.....                      .r.....
.W.....                      .+MMM..
...G...                      ..MMM..
.......                      ..MMM..
.......                      .......

R = ramp                     r = ramp below
W = wall                     + = wall below
G = gear assembly            M = windmill
(all of this built first)

Yeah, that seems to work as well and it is also more power efficient. Besides all windmills in real world are made in that way...

Although the structure I showed demonstrates the point, it seems kind of hokey to me that a gear assembly can support a whole windmill, so I've been throwing in some support legs (although it still says the windmill is "hanging") to make it more realistic.  Placing the walls in the corners still lets you run the axles in any direction.  Here's what I actually build:
 - FW

code:

Z=0                          Z=1

.R.....                      .r.....
.WW.W..                      .+MMM..
...G...                      ..MMM..
..W.W..                      ..MMM..
.......                      .......

R = ramp r = ramp below
W = wall + = wall below
G = gear assembly M = windmill
(all of this built first)

I can answer the watermill question... in order to utilize a brook you need to dig channels in the squares you want to use.  I assume the reasoning is that a brook in it's natural state is too shallow to use as a real water source.
