@HNAPOI: From my knowledge, the Astra Militarum is based on conforming (and sometimes otherwise inefficient-in-a-way-but-also-efficient) principles. Improvised weapons are rare and in between the standard lasguns given to every person in them.

It's a sunny day over the planet of KOB101. It is on this sunny day that you receive orders to go over the trench and charge the orks to soften them up for the main offensive. Normally this is the job of the artillery but a Munitorum error resulted in a lack of shells. But never fear! For your flak vest will protect you from the crude weaponry of the ork and your lasgun will pierce their ramshackle armour! Have faith in the Emperor and you will surely succeed!
