Here's some highlights from the web browsing history from my MacBook from that period: (You can see I'm kind of slow.)

2014-02-22@ 08:20 - Google searched "dwarf fortress processing power". (wondering how powerful of a computer I needed)
2014-02-22@ 08:20 - Google searched "dwarf fortress map size". (to figure out how large Dwarf Fortress was in comparison to Earth and Minecraft)
2014-06-22@ 15:25 - Downloaded Macnewbie_0.8.5.dmg. (containing Dwarf Fortress v0.34.11)
2014-06-23@ 08:40 - visited /r/dwarffortress for maybe the first time
2014-06-24@ 21:02 - Google searched "dwarf fortress ssh". (to see if I could play remotely)
2014-06-24@ 21:02 - found Dfterm3
2014-06-25@ 06:31 - Google searched "dwarf fortress starting party".
2014-06-25@ 06:41 - Google searched "reroll dwarf fortress".
2014-06-25@ 12:23 - Google searched "mayday settlements dwarf fortress". (trying to find a chart of all the settlement icons)
2014-06-25@ 12:39 - Google searched "dwarf fortress reclaim".
2014-06-25@ 12:42 - Google searched "dwarf fortress mayday crown".
2014-06-25@ 12:46 - Google searched "dwarf fortress mayday ruins".
2014-06-25@ 12:59 - found the map legend.
2014-06-25@ 15:13 - Google searched "dwarf fortress prepare for journey run out of points".
2014-06-25@ 16:07 - searched for "dingo" on the Dwarf Fortress wiki.

It doesn't look like I actually played on the MacBook, but was probably switching to my old Windows XP gaming machine to play.

ha, same! I think I've spent more time reading page after page on the Dwarf Fortress wiki and googling anything related to DF than actually playing the game. Hell, I've spent hours just on comparing vermin volume ratios to each other in order to better understand exactly how large a purring maggot is! (long story short, bigger than a chipmunk)

I have a terrible memory for dates but my best guess is late 2013. December maybe? I know that .40.24 wasn't out yet and I decided to finally give the game a whirl because I was feeling nostalgic and couldn't get my old shareware games to run without jumping through hoops or using my very elderly laptop which has iffy wiring. Also it seemed like it had stabilized in development which suited me just fine .....and then .40.24 came out and I ignored it for three years. Oops.

Same! after sneaking around the forums for a year and a half as a guest, I thought it was about time to join the conversation.

I joined the forums at the end of June in 2012, but I may have played DF for a short time before then.

I started playing Dwarf Fortress when i graduated from the school, in June 2016. With the help of captnduck's video tutorials, i dived into DF and enjoyed creating my first forts. I'm currently on hiatus though ('cause of some major bug).

Much less active than I used to be on these forums, but I still visit them on occasion. Will probably resume my activity in full once Dwarf Fortress will be released on Steam.

I got interested after watching Joel [vinesauce] playing. I then started to make the ultimate mistake possible: becoming a god of a bunch of drunken dwarves. Cheers!

I've been aware of it for years but only recently started actually playing.  I had to read the Getting Started book halfway through before I felt confident even enough to open the game at first, because the first time I played, I was too dumb even to get to the point where you die horribly, despite having played Nethack and similar ASCII graphics based games since the late 80s.

I'm now at the point where I usually last 4-5 years before dying horribly.

Just started playing last month, HOWEVER, I've been well aware of Dwarf Fortress for quite some time. No idea when I first heard of it but it's been quite some time. I've always been interested in procedural generation, so Rogue(likes) and Dwarf Fortress were always there when reading about it, etc. No idea why I didn't try it sooner, except perhaps the thought of the time investment required to learn something this complex (real life problems, amirite?). As it turns out, it wasn't too bad (wiki helps, Lazy Newb Pack helps) and I've had a lot of fun playing and a lot of !FUN! learning to play. :)

Saw Dwarf Fortress in an article for Games for Windows with Tarn and Zach playing Go (2007).  After reading the article I thought I would try this interesting "rogue-like" as I had played Rogue, Nethack and Angband before.  When I went on the webpage it was recommended I play the 2D version as the 3D version was "highly unstable".  The rest is history ...

Registered here mid-2008. I'm guessing that I actually started off not too many months earlier but perhaps if I check my first messages.. Hmm, looks like I already knew something of the game, but eight months'-worth?

Yeah, go on, then. 2008. At least for serious dabbling.

I think it was roughly around 2008, one of very early version.

AFAIR there was no Masterwork DF yet, not sure if Meph even played DF yet.

I was fresh after killing Chaos God in ADOM (it was a playthrough where I said *I will* see it to the end.).
After was seems now like forever of bashing Greater Molochs to death and boldly venturing into Cavern of Chaos(or was this Infinite Dungeon?) with only food, pickaxe and a si* in my backpack

I was looking for something fresh, and saw Dwarf Fortress somewhere. Not sure where, must be some page that listed ASCII roguelikes.

I played a bit, got eaten few times by boogeymen, decided to try fort mode.
Embarked at random with a tons of items scattered around. I had no idea what to do and interface was too shitty for me, so I quit.

Around 3 or 4 years ago someone mentioned MDF mod to me. Said about Warlocks, orcs etc. So I decided to check it out.
I returned back just few days after Hermit mode was released.
Been many hours of digging since. Still hoping the game will be kept alive.

*si was an artifact metal object that multiplied itself over time based on how many steps you took. It was a perfect, heavy projectile to be thrown from afar. Unfortunately, as I found out on around 12 level of CoC, whenever you went to a different level all the si-s magically returned to your backpack. I managed to crawl back to the surface tho.

Saw http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/02/dwarf-fortress-ten-hours-with-the-most-inscrutable-video-game-of-all-time/

The URL gives you a good idea of how the review went, and I thought to myself "Come on, the game can't be that hard."

Okay, so it is that hard.

Came for the challenging play, stayed for the modding.
