Mjeh, I started playing DF in high school, where considered any hobby that requires more than 10 minutes of reading to be a waste of time and must require some sort of autism spectrum disorder. DF looked all sorts of crazy to them.

I'm sure most of them have gotten over that by now.
Playing DF does not require you to be on the autism spectrum.  Not saying it wouldn't help, but it's not required.

high functioning AS is nearly neurotypical.  Just a few quirks.

The issue is that many feel that you need to have AS to enjoy complex (but predictable) relationships between things, and that if you aren't, you are just a closet masochist.

If that was the case, then all human technological development would be due to AS, and the masses of the world should celebrate it.

That is not the case though. In either situation.

I should probably PM a good friend about this (as in, her DF experiences maybe). I sorta remember she got here because of DF (and her name is Sappho).

Yeeeah, the stereotypes, even though they are by definition impersonal it can be hard to not take it personally. Especially if they double as an insult in some of the seedier places on the internet.

Though for DF I'm not sure how much of a stereotype it can have since its not even all that well known, at least not to the people I have been around. If it did I guess it would be 'introvert codemonkey' or something? We probably do have more of both those things here than the global statistical average.

So many problems would be solved if we could teach kids that statistical averages don't apply to individuals.

It's a common enough mistake to have a name, ecological fallacy.

I'm going to apologize in advance for being a grammar nazi
So, How is a stereotypical nerd not normal? stereotypical has a similar meaning to "normal", so you've pretty much just said 'I'm not normal, but I'm normal'. granted you said 'normal nerd' not 'normal human', but all in all I consider nerds a normal type of human, anyway(unless, you're a elf, dwarf or something else non-human, in which case I have no idea if you're normal for your species).

'Stereotypical nerd' and 'normal nerd' are not quite the same thing, and certainly have pretty different connotations.

A stereotype is a commonly perceived and oversimplified perception, and usually full of assumptions that are not valid for most of whatever group is being stereotyped.

I agree on 'nerds' being perfectly normal people, but the common stereotype is not just someone who is studious but also socially awkward and cares little for fashion and athletics. Those things together are in some places not really seen as normal, and in anti-intellectual places like high schools they can be a flagrant insult!

Which all once more shows there is nothing wrong with being considered abnormal, especially in high school.

There's a lot more than just that, but especially ironic is that Nazi should be capitalized. (I'm not sure if misusing the term "grammar Nazi" counts or not.)

I was unaware that the German national socialist party had diversified into linguistic purity.

Capital N for national socialists.  Small n for generic authoritarians.(since it is a malapropism and all.)

Ah yes, quite right.  "Misappellation" is a better fit.  Still, small n for generic authoritarians. Big N for national socialists.
