See, I'm separating boxes and bags by game mechanics here, instead of by their 'realistic' categorical similarities.  Boxes are never used as reagents, they're never carried around to pick up things, they never get put inside other things.  Likewise (though I can't speak for all players, obviously), bags practically never get used as storage furniture because boxes are vastly easier to produce.

Gameplay-wise, they're very different things that shouldn't be lumped together.  Also, as they are now, they're a serious pain in the ass in the new manager.  :P

I can't agree enough.

For example, if you wanted to check if a unit was eligible to be a politician or a car salesman, you'd first want to verify that there is no soul present...

The more appropriate question becomes, are they awesome and dwarven enough.

Well, from that perspective I guess you do have a point.

I'm curious as to how a tank would evolve. Would it climb out of the primordial ooze wiggling it's track-nubs, feeding on smaller jeeps before crawling onto the shore having evolved proper treds?
My ship exploded midflight, but all the shrapnel totally landed on Alpha Centauri before anyone else did.  Bow before me world leaders!

"does anyone actually place bags instead of boxes"... I always use bags for 'storage furniture' because they're easier to obtain?

Either through embark (you'll have to dump out fruits bought at embark anyway to brew them, and with herbalism can set seed cap to 0 or near it) or because the first dwarven caravan always brings highly decorated bags (pretty to look at while laying in hospital).

I agree on though that method of distinguishing in the manager would be great, purely on account of "cloth vs silk vs leather".

So here's another gripe I have with bags. Since I despise surface farming like a good dwarf should! I don't need seeds other than the usual suspects, yet I tend to trade for fruits for booze variety, but then wind up with all these garbage seeds. Got them going to the trashpile, except I see them taking my precious bags with them, is there no way to forbid this bad behavior?
Granted I don't know what that has to do with this thread, I guess it wouldn't help with that.

Hmmm...there's always gotta be 1 :P But hey, I guess if 1 person uses it it's legit.
I wouldn't call them easier to obtain. I always need bags for crafting input/output. Coffers you actually NEED very few (and eventually I give every bedroom a chest and cabinet myself, but they aren't needed) especially early on, and stone is always plentiful.
