Difference between Scimitars and Short Swords?

I've got a dwarf who likes scimitars and steel, so I'd like to make him my weapon smith in the hopes of him getting a mood and making me a high class scimitar, with my one star ruby on it since he likes gems. However, what's the difference between a scimitar and short sword? I didn't see any when I checked the raws, is it literally just a name difference?

They have a smaller contact area on the pommel bash, but for the most common uses of a swordsdwarf (Slashing, stabbing) they are functionally identical.

Oh okay, so pretty much no difference. Ohwell, even if he makes me an artifact scimitar it'll be the best one in the world.

Yeah, I mean, an artifact scimitar is still basically an artifact short sword, and an artifact short sword is a perfectly good weapon for a dorf.

Even after two years of playing, I still haven't come across a dwarf who likes long swords... Two hands, scimitars, morningstars, mauls, great axes... Everything but long swords.

As somebody else already brought up, scimitars are almost identical to short swords aside for a smaller contact area for the pomel bash. This makes them ever so slightly better than a short sword. As far as one-handed swords go they rank as follows.

Long Sword > Scimitar > Short Sword.

If you are are a large enough creature to wield a two hander in one hand they are obviously the top sword in the game. Long Swords are considerably better base weapons than short swords. It makes a BIG difference.
