That just begs the question of what is the best katana ever  :P

We (and by that I mean me) are getting caught up in being prepared for every situation. We can cut the weapons back to the knives and whatever our companions want/need. I've been operating under the idea that Muramasa might end up bringing us unwanted attention, but it builds up from killing things anyway so might as well drop that idea.

Do we want speed or stealth? We could trade our single horse for a mule to carry our stuff and go on foot being much less noticeable, or we could get horses for everyone and move much faster as long as we properly take care of them.

In either case, gear needs to be sorted. We can get a helmet and hats for everyone, the helmet we'll switch to when we're in a position to prepare for combat. I like the idea of keeping the blowgun due to its 10 meter range and stealthiness. Besides that, we can drop the weapons for us (and sell that spear we kept), keep on with gearing up our allies with the weaponry, armor, and alcohol they desire, and fill up the rest of our carrying capacity with the utility items we've mentioned, food and water, and whatever money we might be able to get. We'll also want a few different choices of clothes for all of us.

I'm running out of gas so the rest of this will be brief. Acknowledged on the focus of the story bit. My thinking is that having Scorpion clan resources will make finding those in specific whom we seek vengeance on much easier. And vengeance through the destruction of everything they held dear sounds about the same level as what they did to us so war doesn't sound like the worst idea from that perspective. But yeah, no worries on focusing on Hideki's journey.

((Well lads and lasses, it's been a few days. Sorry about that. I got distracted by good movies and interesting games, and every time I started doing the update I'd find something shiny to distract myself with.

I'll continue on for now. We'll say that Hideki went to the armoury but we'll leave the details up for later. Try and get the definative list of stuff you want somewhere in the next 2-3 updates, at least before leaving the palace.))

Turn 24

Nara, Palace

At the dismissal of his daimyo Hideki and his companions leave the tea room and head for the armoury, but not before Ed finishes his mochi and Otsu drains the entire bottle of booze. THe armoury master is accomodating, but within reason.

Next up they are led to a small space in between walls. The space leads upwards, with a slit just underneath the ceiling allowing Hideki to look into the room. The room itself is the same sparse though elegant kind as the tea room. There is a table and cushion for every guest. They are laid out in a rectangle, with the two places at the ends being raised, one for the daimyo and one for the guest of honour. Beside the daimyo, against the wall, is also a suit of heavy samurai armour.

After about an hour, people start moving into the room. First is the Daimyo and the serving people. The lady takes her place at the head of the seating arrangements and the serving people begin laying out the cutlery and such. After the tables are set, so to speak, the Crane clan comes inside. There are nine of them in total, the commissioner and eight of his retinue. Most of them look like pencil pushers to Hideki, though two of the retinue might be fairly tough in a fight judging from their movements. The commissioner hismelf is an older, stocky man, with a long wispy beard and facy looking clothing.

The banquet goes along as usual: formal introductions are made, pleasantries are exchanged and a lot of political talking is done. Mostly the commissioner seems to want to convince the daimyo to subjugate herself and the clan to the Cranes in return for protection and help, but the daimyo continues to give the old man the cold shoulder. Finally, one of the servants signals that it is time for tea. The commissioner speaks up at this.

"Ah, I picked up a delightful tea back in Kyoto. My lad Doichi here is also a very good teamaker. Would it be alright to have him make our tea? That wouldn't be a problem now, would it?"

He grins, but the daimyo doesn't miss a beat.

"Of course, I am very curious what kind of tea you have brought from the wolve's den."

The commissioner's aide prepares the tea they brought and serves it to everyone.

"How refreshing, it has a very fruity taste. Plum?"

"Plums and cherries, or so I was told. Though I admit they may have gone a bit heavy on the plum."

"How nice. We have prepared some entertainment for this morning. I hope you like music."

Just then, a small woman wearing a bright orange kimono walks into the room. Her kimono carries mantis clan insignia and she is carrying a koto. She sits down in the middle of the seats and begins to play. It is a slow, emotional peace, and everyone in the room is soon transixed on her and her music. The entire piece lasts only 10 minutes or so. Many people in the room are getting misty eyed, Hideki can see, and even Ed is sniffling a bit. Only the daimyo seems completely unaffected.

Just as the mantis performer starts on her second piece, one of the Crane clan slumps over on their little table. A second of the crane clan tries to get up, but their legs give way underneath them. In minutes, the crane clan people are either laying completely still or failing to move their limbs much at all. All except the commissioner, who seems less affected.

"W-What is the meaning of this?"

"Well, as you probably expected, I had the tea poisoned."

"B-but how? Guards! Guards!"

The doors at the other end of the room open, but instead of crane clan warriors, two Scorpion ninja walk in.

"The crane clan guards inside the palace are dealt with, my lady" one of them says.

"Good, alert the other cells. Their caravan personnel is not to leave the city alive. Have them search their belongings for documents as well."

The two ninja bow and leave again, closing the door.

"B-but how?! We brought our own tea and had our own man prepare it in front of us! We even used our own cups! You couldn't have poisoned it-"

"Pathetic fool. You think the only way to poison something is to do so before it is served? Look at the ceiling. My ninjas were hiding in a crawlspace above the ricepaper. Once our performance had your rapt attention, they made small holes in the ceiling. Then they dropped a a hair fine wire, nearly invisible to the human eye, from the hole into your cup. From there, it is only a a matter of letting a drop of our finest poison glide down the wire into your tea. But don't worry, yours a special one. Whereas your men will have died quick and painless deaths, the poison in your cup will only get more painful over time. Our record victim held out for 48 hours of excruciating pain, I wonder how long you will last."

In a desperation move, the commissioner draws a small blade from his clothes and lunges. The daimyo unfurls her fan and slaps the knife out of his hand with a loud twack, signalling that it is a tessen, or a metal war fan. It draws blood from the commisiioners hand, and one of his fingers is bent at an unhealthy angle.

"You mongrel. You come into my home and have the audacity to ask me to subjugate my clan to yours. But I am nothing if not merciful. Answer our questions, and you will have the antidote."

The commissioner, cradling his hands and becoming paler by the second, whimpers his consent.

"Is your clan behind the murder of one of our clans?"

"Y-yes. Though I swear I didn't have anything to do with it! The orders came from higher up!"

She then asks him some other questions, related to commerce and some internal bakufu politics that Hideki can't really follow.

"Cease your sniveling, worm. The antidote to the poison will be yours soon. But first, perhaps Hideki would like to ask a question of you?"

The commissioner is very pale and sweating, clearly the pain is already starting to worsen.

Does Hideki have any questions for him? Something else?

Also, retroactively, how about that shopping list?

Can we get a good armored disguise cloak, one that has say chain mail hidden inside and two different cloaks on each side, one what an upper class merchant might wear and the other a darker colored hobo/homeless/peasant cloak?

Maybe Powder or smoke bombs of some kind?

I know how many planned this and the names of some, give me all you know, I will know if you say too many and the wrong ones.

Add a grappling hook to that order, trading our spear for an average quality one, 5 more throwing knives, 3 combat knives, and whatever equipment our allies want

And a change of clothes or three.

I think there's really only one question we need to ask.

((Sorry about dissapearing for a few days. I managed to catch a cold during summer and stuffy nose + headaches + second warmest week of the year are not a good combination. Anyway, how about someone posts a little tie-breaker between the three proposed actions?

Turn 25

Nara, Palace

The daimyo stands aside and Hideki walks up to the comissioner. The man si sweating profusely now, his fingers twitching eratically and his eyes becoming bloodshot.

"What do you know about Ogino Iemochi? Or any Scorpion clan traitor if the name is not familiar to you.", Hideki asks him.

"I-I don't know!"

"You're going to have to do better than that if you want the antidote."

"L-look, we have a few people working f-for us in Nara. They operate out of a warehouse in the docks. I-I-I think it stores sake, there's a secret sub-basement. That's all I know, I s-swear!"

"What do you know of the Shogun's current plans?"

"I don't know the details, you have to believe me! All I know is that he's doing anything he can to form an unstoppable power block completely loyal to him. He needs that for his further plans! They don't tell me what I don't need to know, I don't even rank that high. Please!"

The twitching is getting worse and somewhere in between answering his nose just started bleeding spontaneously.

"Why did he get rid of his previous shadow?"

"I believe I can answer that", the daimyo interrupts. "The official story is that the previous shadow went missing during a covert operation on an anti-bakufu rebel faction. The truth of the matter is that the man was simply getting old. We fabricated that story and set him up with a cover identity so that he could retire in peace. I believe he's become somewhat of a scholar, published some works on youkai. You two should meet sometime."

"I was never told of this."

"Of course not, it was top secret. Only myself and a select few advisors to the Emperor know of it. I might as well reveal it now because, well, we do live in interesting times."

The commissioner coughs up some blood. It mingles with the bits of foam at the corners of his mouth, making for quite the ghastly appearance. The daimyo holds her fan in front of her face.

"Not even an hour and already you are succumbing? How dissapointing. I believe you'll only get one more question out of him before the poison starts affecting his mind. So if you still want to ask something, you better do it quick before I administer the antidote."

What will Hideki's last question be, if any?

Also, what will his next course of action be? (optional, you can also wait a turn if the next question is crucial somehow.)


((I'll add the shopping list to the inventory post some other day, still feeling kinda meh.))

And thus Hideki stood there, gazing along silently. He then fell over, drooling on the floor for a few minutes before passing away as a result froma  sudden brain hemorrhage.

Well no, not really. Anyone want to post an action? I realize the whole palace bit has been a bit devoid of action, but that's what happens when you trust the leader of a great clan  to do their thing.

Also: that shortbow+arrows on the shopping list was for Ed, right?

The best I can think of is either asking about specifics about the agents in Nara or asking about collaborators in other clans. Otherwise we can defer the question to our daimyo.

Correct about the shortbow and arrows. If Otsu and Ed have any suggestions for things they could use, that would be appreciated as well.

The daimyo already asked her share of questions a few turns ago. But don't sweat it too much, you've at least got the location of the Nara agents, so you can continue onwards.

Ed has all he needs with his shortbow now, and Otsu really likes her staff most of all. So they're fine for now.

Neato. I was thinking along the lines of armor or utility supplies or alcohol. For the final question, unless someone has a suggestion or a preference, I recommend a coin toss between the two.

Turn 26

Nara, Palace

"What about traitors in other clans?"

"I know there are cells in every clan but the Spiders. I-I don't know precicely how many there are."

He has a violent coughing fit at this point. He wipes away some blood that he coughed up with a severely trembling hand.

"Some cells are larger than others. I know that the Scorpion cell is fairly small, because t-they had a hard time setting up shop. T-there's also agents planted in the local populace. Please, that's all I know! I need the antidote now, It's getting to be too much!"

Hideki doesn't doubt what the man is saying. The whites of his eyes are red with blood right now and he can barely use his hands due to the violent twitching of his arms and fingers.

"Well then, I suppose you've earned the antidote."

The commisioner practicaly crawls up to the daimyo as she reaches inside her kimono. Just as the man has regained some hope, she takes out a small tanto and stabs him right in the throat. The man's face turns to one of pure panic as she pulls it back out and pushes him out of the way. He falls to the floor, bleeding out.

"The only antidote to all suffering is the sweet release of death. Now then, Nagayoshi, it seems we have more rats in our city. Would you like to go to their nest alone, or shall we send a force of our warriors? Who knows, perhaps Ogino is still in his nest. You needn't bother with the traitors if you don't want to, now that we know where they are, it is but a matter of time before the shadows swallow them whole."

What will Hideki do now?

((Small update, but the banquet is over now and Hideki can go back to action. Hooray))

Their thoroughness in spreading out cells makes sense, and confirmation of such is definitely useful and will let us plan accordingly.

I say we briefly stake out the place, presuming we know which place it is, and then once we have a fair assessment of the traitors there we move in with Scorpion warriors on stand by to make sure that none escape.

They will have known about the Crane clan being here most likely so time is of the essence before they decide to scatter. We'll need to take a small bit of time though to make sure that we get them all.

+1, also make sure the daimyo blocks off all the exits of the city to capture/kill any that escape the initial net.
