Grab the horses reins, mount it, and carry on. Coat the throwing knives in lethal poison along the way.

Turn 14

The road home

Hideki walks over to the horse. The horse is just lazily grazing and doesn't even react much when Hideki goes through the saddlebags, obviously the animal is very used to human presence. Hideki waits a moment to allow the horse to eat a bit, filling up a jug that he found in the saddlebags with water from nearby stream and coating his throwing knives in lethal poison in the meantime. Hideki then gently grabs the reigns and climbs on the horse, and the duo trot off along the mountain path to their destination, Nara.

One week later

Hideki, somewhat weary from travel, arrives at the gates of Nara. The guards at the gate don't give him a hard time as he enters, but he can see that they've got their eye on him. It is no wonder that they are suspicious of travelling ronin, these guards have the kamon of the scorpion clan on their armour. If there are any who know the dangers of letting strangers inside the gates, it is these men. He ties up his horse at the stables and heads into the city. It is fast becoming evening. Street vendors are putting out their small stands along the roads, offering cheap food and drink. As he walks, a magpie caws making him look up and he sees an azure-winged magpiefly towards Heijo palace. The imposing building complex stands at the Center-North of the city. Once it was the Imperial residence, today it is the main administrative complex of the Scorpion clan. Blood and coin flow in and out daily.

Walking through the park, Hideki's mood is somewhat lifted by the sight of the many deer walking freely around. The deer are as much a part of the park as any of the plants, and over the generations have become very used to people. Two smaller deer walk up to him and push him with their nuzzles. Hideki eventually relents, giving them some of the provision in his bag, smiling as he pets the deer as they eat.

What will Hideki do?:
-Request an audience with Lady Amano, the Courtesan of Death, Daimyo of the Scorpion clan and Wife of the man he served under for many years?
-Find an Inn to find information/rest?
-Seek old contacts?
-others

Turn 15

Nara park, Nara

Patting the last small deer as it gobbles up the remainder of the trail mix he threw on the ground, Hideki ponders if he could find any of his old contacts in the city still. Getting a lay of the land before beginning his plans would be a good idea. It might be difficult to find them in these trying times. Though he has only been away for a few months at most, the news of his clan's demise and all the rumours that come with that are sure to have reached this place long ago. His old contacts and comrades in arms are sure to have taken their precautions, if they haven't just gone off the grid completely by now. But, come heaven or hell, even if the city were about to be crushed by a drop falling from the tip of the jade spear of the heavens, there is one place in this town where Hideki is sure to find someone he knows...
The deer trots off after its mother as Hideki walks away from the palace, towards the seedy underbelly of Nara.

Red light district, Nara

Hideki walks the streets of the Nara red light district, feeling quite at home. He has walked these countless times, the humdrum of massage parlors, hostess bars and drunken partygoers making him feel right at home. In these crowds any man could blend in. Finally at his destination, Hideki pushes aside the cloth drapes that hang in the doorway to Sayo's Snackhouse. Though it might look like any other snackhouse in the red light district, looks can be decieving. Sayo, the proprietress of the establishment, is not called the Diva of Nara for nothing. Anyone who is something in Nara, seedy underbelly or not, comes to this place. Privacy and excellent service are worth more than a gaudy decor, and Sayo delivers. It is said that on new year's eve, the Courtesan of Death herself hires Sayo to cater her parties.

When Hideki enters the elderly Sayo is at her usual spot at behind the reception desk, welcoming patrons and giving guidance to her serving girls. Already nearing the end of her 50th summer, she still looks full of life and carries herself with an air of vigor and dignity. She wears an understated grey kimono of high quality with a black sash and has her hair done up like one of the classic geisha's. She is smoking her Kiseru, the long and narrow pipe traditional to Nippon. When she sees Hideki enters she recognizes him even beneath the grime and wear of his months long journey. She smiles and taps out her pipe into the ashtray.

"As I live and breathe, if it isn't Hideki. I was told you perished along with the rest of your clan."

"Not quite, Sayo. It will take more than a few assassins to kill me."

"As expected from the Shogun's Shadow, of course. I take it you're not here for pleasantries?"

"No, business as usual I'm afraid. I was wondering if any of my old contacts have been around."

"As you probably expected, most of the people I regularely catered to for you have pretty much dissapeared into thin air once the news of your clan reached these parts. But fear not, some of them are still around. In fact, Tsuki is here right now. I'll get one of my girls to bring you to her."

"Thanks, Sayo. And, please, keep this as discreet as possible."

"Hideki, you hurt me. You know what I say. What happens in the snackhouse, stays in the snackhouse." She taps her pipe onto the ashtray, the metal on metal giving an eerie ringing sound. "...or else."

Right away, one of the serving girls leads Hideki to one of the back rooms. When he enters, he sees Tsuki is sitting around a small table, drinking with two other women and being merry. She is a young woman in her late twenties, with jet black hair tied up in a ponytail and a small scar running along her right cheeck. She is currently wearing a casual kimono. Despite her appearance, Hideki knows all too well what she is capable of. She trained under him for quite some time, becoming an accomplished ninja in her own right. A blur with knives and a deadly shot, not many were deadlier than her when striking from the shadows. Several years ago, she quit her work as a ninja to work for Sayo. She now heads the Hyakka, the all-female secret police of Nara's red light district. Working undercover as courtesans and prostitutes, they dispense swift and terrible justice to any who would break the red light district's merriment.

"Nagayoshi-dono! You're alive!"

With a curt nod she dismisses the two women, who file out of the room without complaint but not before giving a courteous bow to Hideki. Hideki sits down opposite of Tsuki and takes a sip of the sake before him. And immediatly after another one, for good measure. Sayo did always serve the good stuff, hot damn.

"Please, Tsuki, just call me Hideki. We've known eachother long enough."

"As you wish, sensei. But, we thought you were dead. How did you manage to survive all that time?"

The bonds between teacher and student are strong indeed, and Hideki knows Tsuki would never betray him. There are but a scant few people on this world he truly trusts, and she is one of them. So he tells her the story of his misfortune over copious amounts of sake and salted beans, beginning with the assassins on the bridge, the attackers on the mountain and the road to Nara. He leaves out most of the details of the cave for now.

"Amazing. I should never have doubted your skills, sensei. But what will you do now, and why come to me? I don't know where any of your old contacts went, after leaving your tutelage those years ago. I can tell you that old man Genji is currently at the palace. The old geezer was summoned by the Courtesan of Death herself, which can't be good."

Indeed it can't. Old man Genji is an old and dear friend of Hideki and is a wonderful chef, which is his day job. The man is also ever so slightly unhinged and one of the most skilled alchemists Nippon has ever known. Hideki hopes his daimyo has hired him to cook for banquet, because the alternative would mean that trouble is afoot. Still, it means he has someone inside the palace that he trusts, which means that getting in contact with the Scorpion clan higher-ups should be a lot easier now.

What will Hideki do now?

((Are the higher ups of the scorpion clan trustworthy?))

A better question might be, what can we offer them so they are willing to be trust worthy? The Scorpion is the clan of spies and information in service of the Emperor. If helping us puts the Emperor or operations for the Emperor at risk, we'll be cut off like a dead twig. What we need now is information. What's currently going on in a global, country, and local scale, what players are making unusual moves, where the Courtesan of Death stands on our family's death, what are target is currently up to and where he is located. As well as anything else Tsuki thinks is relevant.

I think a coup might be going on. The Lion, Phoenix, and Crane were presumably involved in our family's death and dishonor, they form a power block of 'traditionally minded' clans, they form the group that is against a current charged political point (interacting favorably with foreigners), and are attempting to discredit and dispower the Scorpion, who are the Emperor's eyes and ears. It COULD be just interclan poltics and the Crane are looking to become more powerful, but there's too much cooperation otherwise.

I think we should ask Tsuki about the information above the above. After that, we can either hit the streets ourselves to get information, ask Tsuki to do so on our behalf when she has the time and opportunity, get in contact with Genji through Tsuki so that we can get his opinion on things, do the previous to get in contact with our Shogun, or pursue the target independently.

I'm in favor for asking Tsuki about the above above above information and making decisions from there.

Turn 16

Sayo's snack house

"Tsuki, tell me about the world and its happenings."

"Oh, um, so there were like a bunch of gods. Five I think. Somehow there got to be two more. The five gods gave the two new gods a jade spear and told them to make a country. So they dipped the spear into the sea and from the stuff that dripped off of the tip Nippon was formed. Then they-"

"Whoa, stop. That's not what I meant. At all. I meant about what's been happening around here."

"Oh! Good, because I really didn't pay much attention in temple school so my recollection of the story is really muddy. Things have been fairly subdued around here, at least on the surface.

I know that the daimyo and her advisors attempted to investigate the bandit attack, because she didn't believe bandits could wipe out an entire clan of ours in such an efficient way, reasoning that they simply wouldn't have a reason to do so. She was never able to pin the blame on anyone though. I heard that most of the men they captured either weren't involved or outright committed suicide before getting being brought in for interrogation. The daimyo still believes there was foul play, but she just can't prove it.

Since then, our relations with the Crane Clan have worsened considerably. Since they were so quick to put one of their own shinobi in the position of shogun's shadow. Those third rate embarassments to the ninja name would never have gotten the position, but since the shogun himself is Crane Clan it's all buddy politics. Not that it impacts our clan's standing dramatically. We've lost a lot of prestigate, but everyone who needs work done right still comes to us to hire shinobi, including the Wolf Clan.

We've also begun to trade more with the Nanban, surprisingly. The daimyo's sister of the Mantis Clan convinced her to open our ports to the barbarians. They're a strange bunch, but they bring trade and other exciting things with them. They're coin is good too, so we can't really complain.

Ask Tsuki if she's heard anything about our target Ogino Iemochi.  Barring that, ask her about Crane Clan important individuals.in the area.

Once we get done with our initial target, I say we fuck with the Crane clan.  Assassinate a few politicians, frame other clans, especially the lion and phoenix clans.  Crane, phoenix and lion were all involved in our betrayal and the destruction of our clan, let's see if we can instigate violence between them, have them hurt each other.

Maybe raise some bandit groups, anarchists and militias that we can't be immediately connected with; some small armed groups to raise hell, while we personally remain undetected and separate and capable of striking persons of interest with impunity.

Sayo's snackhouse

"Tell me. Have you heard anything about a man named Ogino Iemochi. He's a scorpion ninja."

"Hmm, I can't say I have. The name sounds somewhat familiar, but I can't put a face on it. If anything, he hasn't been in the red light district in these past few weeks. We keep tabs on dangerous individuals like him."

"All right, what about important Crane Clan individuals?"

"Now there I can help you. A crane clan ship arrived a few days ago. No matter how discreet their guards are, the sailors like to blabber about about when they're drunk. Looks like one of their higher-ups is coming to the palace for a banquet with the daimyo, to discuss the relations between our clans. The ship arrived here ahead on time to allow the higher-up to return home quickly. It seems he came down from kyoto by carriage and will go back east by boat. I don't have direct info on the guy, but from what the sailors have been saying he should be at the palace with the daimyo about now."
