An unmeasurable time ago the races of the world scrambled for cover when the heavens fell to earth and a cataclysm engulfed the world. Many races found themselves in a new, dimmer, deeper, world. Some races found themselves in barren isolated caverns, disconnected sanctuaries that were close to the surface world. For years they managed to survive on what little food they were able to produce or catch within these isolated areas. Yet these places could not support many lives and most of the survivors had resigned themselves to starving in the dark. They had survived fire and devastation only to wither away to nothing. The people of the world sat quietly in the dark and began to cry. Crying for their lost lives, their lost loved ones, and their lost world. As if moved by the utter despair of mortality, the earth heaved and shook. Cracks, crevices, caves, tunnels, an entire new world, opened in the shuddering stone leading to fantastical and strange new worlds. A new age was upon the world and the survivors looked down into the gaping darkness and saw hope deep below.
A nation of elves and humans managed survive. With their old system of government as dead as the rest of the world, they decided to forgo replacing it. Instead a temporary leader was elected who would see that the people are guided to an anarcho-capitalist society. Among the people of the society they had enough experience to construct a single underground farm.
A race of catgirls, accompanied by hulking minotaurs also survived. Their democratic system of government survived even the end of the world. Never has exceptional nightvision been more useful for a mortal soul. Not only did the catgirls bring their sharp eyes, but they also managed to save many important documents from the Old World. Many of these held the secrets to technologies like farming, fishing, and mining, but most importantly among them was one on how to manipulate mana. With this knowledge, perhaps the catgirls could relearn how to use magic.
Oddly enough, one of the least hardy races of the world managed to survive the cataclysm. Gnomes are not known for their strength of body, but their minds hold incredible potential. Far vaster than the minotaur warriors they enlisted before the apocalypse. The gnomes have organized themselves into five main guilds. The Roads Guild, the Fishing Guild, the Hunting Guild, the Writing Guild, and the Mathematics Guild. In time these guilds will guide the gnomish society into a true subterranean enterprise.
A fourth race was already inside a vast cave when the cataclysm began. The Telrac, a race of vampiric winged creatures. They stalk the underdark looking for creatures to quench their bloody thirst. Those that survive being drained become dark minions of the Telrac. Led by the Eternal Monarchy, the vampiric imps find themselves looking upon a whole new world of food.
The last race is a race of lanky slightly amorphous humanoids. The Mashakev find themselves cut off from the constellations that once gave them guidance and purpose. Now buried beneath the earth they are forced to delve deeper away from the open sky. Yet they were not totally out of their element here in the dark. Eternal night has settled over the Mashakev, and one must wonder whether this was a sign from Kaduun or a terrible misfortune.
Thus begins Typhong, the first month of the new year. A strange unknown world has opened up beneath you. To survive, you must venture deep below.
