It was hard to believe, that only a few months ago, you were explaining to your parents why a fresh graduate like you would move to Serverside. Worried about the rampant data-leeching in the city (apparently they forgot you're a Sec Specialist) your parents have gotten you a High-Security apartment. You have just only finished adjusting the parameters to your liking and patched all the governmental backdoors (no thanks, Big Brother).

As a SECURITY SPECIALIST, also known colloquially as a HACKER, your talent is highly sought after in Serverside. A good thing, too, because you will soon have to pay some protection money for the MODERATORS.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, you should tell your name to ADANA (Arbitrarily Denominated Acronymed machine Named ADANA), the program you just installed to take care of your apartment room.

Mako was born in Seattle in 2077, 31th of January, to Jeffrey and Nagisa Vance. She has a brother 5 years her senior named Shiro Vance. Following her brother, she graduated as a Software Engineer. Born one year after the food crisis in 2076, Mako's parents had taken out loans to even support her. This, in turn, meant that they would spend the most of Mako's childhood away from home, working to pay off their debts. She grew up independent but not as hard-up as some, spending most of her life on the Matrix. Her older brother was the only feature in her life that she looked up to, and as he became a Matrix Developer for a Corp, so did that become her goal. When their parents died in a car crash accident, her brother revealed a side Mako had never seen before, hiring a lawyer to arrange so that he would have the inheritance, with her only getting just enough to finish her education. Hurt and betrayed, she had trouble trusting people since then. Although she no longer wanted to be like her brother, tech was still her calling. While she was not naïve by any means, she came to Withmore City, the home of New Light Media, which was apparently developing a 'Matrix Killer'. Mako felt lost when she made the decision to come to the city, but she knew she wanted to be a part of the future.

Unfortunately for androids, they already weren’t men.

There were many theories on why a Vivant (They would just call it an ‘Android’, but some tools already copyrighted that for market usage) was less likely to be a criminal than a human. Some people believed that their servile disposition made them more likely to comply with the authority. Some believed that they were good people and it was just humans that are dicks.

Right now, floating in the void of VR, Hazel Foley thought that it was because the ones that do break the law gets their mind reprogrammed. When this was done to a human, it usually had the effect of crippling them for life. The same couldn’t be said for a Vivant, so it was acceptable to tinker with their brains, ethics be damned.

Except he didn’t feel any different. He wasn’t sure if he could feel different, since he never had his mind rewritten before. Hazel just thought that when somebody’s mind was being rewritten, they’d feel less, you know, conscious.

And they definitely didn’t get woken up feeling exactly the same.

“That’s…. That’s it?” he asked skeptically, his eyes adjusting to the harsh white light of the workshop. It would be an operation room, but for a Vivant it was a workshop. His handler was standing there, and there was a fat, round-faced man with a neatly coiffed hair. That description could fit many people working in the Inner Sector. But in this case it fit Bole Vaans, MD, Mayor of Rosebed City.
