As ghosts, you will be able to perform any kind of magic. The catch is that you only roll a d4 for magic you are unskilled with, so you will never perfectly succeed except for easy tasks.
There are two exceptions to this rule which are normal rolls: possession, and capturing a memory. You can possess both objects and beings, which is difficult against beings that resist and have a strong will, but easier if your target is willing to be possessed, is cursed, or is unconscious. A partial success results in disorientation (called
Soul Sickness) and a penalty to actions for a few turns while you regain your bearings.
As ghosts, you are also intangible while you don't have a body, but you can become weakly tangible to try and move objects or cause trouble. You are invisible to normal people.
SHARDS AND MEMORY CAPTUREIn order to gain powers, you must find shards of memory from the souls of those departed. Magic was quite a rare thing in the past, and most souls of the past have already gone to the realm of light. It may be possible, however, to find souls willing to grant you their memories, either souls who are in the process of leaving or souls who have remained in the outer darkness.
These shards of memory let you roll more than a d4 when using magic, so long as the ability in question is contained within the memory. Abilities are classified into a
TIER based on difficulty. Tier 0 abilities require a roll of 3 to partially succeed, while Tier 1 abilities require a 4 for partial success, and so on.
Shards, on the other hand, are classified by
LEVEL. Level 1 provides a d6, Level 2 provides a d8, and so on.
You can gain Shards through the following:
- Attempting to cast the ability yourself, then possessing a witness and capturing the resultant memory. The subject will forget the memory and it will form a small shard that is invisible to humans and is stored on your ghostly body. Memory capture is harder to do for characters with high willpower, and during Soul Sickness.
- Receiving a memory shard from a human who has witnessed magic before. The same procedure as above applies.
- Forcibly capturing a Shard from a soul in a Soul Trance. You can also capture your own memories this way. While in a Soul Trance, a soul's memories are exposed and you can attempt to view or capture a memory through physical contact.
- Receiving a Shard from another soul voluntarily. A soul can freely give away its own memories to others, but the Shard will start off at Level 1
You can combine Shards of the same level and of different but related memories to create a single Shard of higher level. If you fail, you may end up with a Mixed Shard that contains both memories but remains level 1. You are more likely to fail by combining shards of different kinds of memories.
