Running Dwarf Fortress across different Linux distros.
« on: July 12, 2016, 08:12:05 pm »

Heyo,everybody.

I finally started using Manjaro Linux a little more than a week ago and I really wanted to play DF on this distro. But since Manjaro is based off Arch Linux all I had to do was look for DF on pacman(Arch's package manager) and just easily install the game and all it's dependencies from there.

Also, most utilities for DF are on the Arch User Repository and are also an easy install.

The thing is, not all people run an Arch-based distro and prefer the Debian or Fedora family...and that made me curious and, also because I am Linux newbie as well, I wanted to ask some stuff: How do you people install DF's dependencies with ease? Does DF runs smoothly in your distro? Do you have any tips on how to make it run faster? How do you install mods and tilesets on the Linux version?

So my hope for this thread is that we can talk about stuff related to DF Linux and maybe help some users that are having some technical difficulties with the Linux version. So, yeah.....feel free to give some hints and share your distro with us if you want to.

Well... I've been working on packaging DF and friends for Fedora, using the Arch packages as a basis-- they're pretty great. Before that, getting DF going on Fedora was always kind of a pain, for me anyway.

I am not entirely sure I like the way the Arch tileset packages seem to work (which is one reason I haven't made Fedora versions yet-- the other is that I've never actually used a tileset personally...); dwarffortress-ironhand is set to conflict with dwarffortress, for example. It seems like it'd be better if you installed the tileset packages and then had some way to choose which tileset to use. Something similar for mods would be great too: under this scheme, ~/.dwarffortress/raw is a symbolic link to elsewhere on the filesystem (/opt/dwarffortress on Arch and /usr/share/dwarffortress on Fedora), so it seems like it'd be easy to have some tool that points that elsewhere and then launches the game.

Yeah, the way it replaces your entire game and not just the tileset files is annoying, totally agree with you there. But at least the usual useful stuff like Soundsense, Therapist, dfhack and even the LNP are also there.....and that's more than enough to make the life of someone a little bit easier.

I'm also a bit surprised that DF runs more smoothly on Linux for me than on my Windows partition. I was really not expecting that.
