I know during map creation you can generate map sizes from pocket (17x17) all the way to large (257x257).

I understand those are the number of tiles as depicted in the Shift+Q screen, yes?

Now, how many on-foot tiles do I have to walk to go from one world map tile to another? From what I can conclude, the wiki seems to mean 768 tiles, but I'm still rather confused.

You walk on these normally, and engage in combat and such here.

You deal with these when on the travel map, find one of your forts that's like, 3x3, switch the right minimap from the zoomed out world mode to the partially zoomed out mode, then move past your fort, you'll go three travel tiles from one side to the other on the right map, it's a bit more granular on the up close travel screen though, closer to nine, at three "steps" per "jump" on the right map.

These are what your cursor moves across in the quest screen, one large site per tile generally, towns, hamlets, dark pits, etc, but you can get lairs and camps crowded in around them.

48 per embark tile, 16 embarks per world tile, 768 total.

So the largest worlds have over 50 million total tiles.
