Current way to safely smelt with (spoiler)
« on: July 10, 2016, 02:31:13 am »

What is the current safe way to smelt with magma? Is it safe to just channel down and build a magma forge/smelter over the channeled tile with the impassable tile right on the hole? Or do I need a grate (magma-safe grate?)?

Speaking of which, is there now in 43.05 a way to ignore "Warm Stone" cancellations? It would be quite useful for digging out a room one level above a magma pool.

I dig a tunnel below my workshops to be and have drawbridges and a wall grate at the inlet. When the tunnel is full of magma I close the innermost drawbridge. The grate and the other bridges are for potential future expansion with a minecart magma filling station, obsidian farm, and a magma pump stack.
I've seen some indications in the past (but no confirmation) that it might be possible for critters to move diagonally upwards past the impassable workshop tile (using the same logic as when passing into an up/down staircase from below diagonally upwards). Thus, the impassable tile placement is mainly for dorf protection. No grate is needed to protect dorfs in that configuration, but it might work to keep critters out (but I don't know if you can place a workshop on top of a grate). I think I've seen some indication that magma crabs can spit through grates, though, but since there's no vision for the vertical diagonal access crabs ought not to be able to see a target to spit at with an impassable workshop tile on top of the magma. A grate shouldn't need to be magma safe, since it's above the magma. I use magma safe grates for my magma filling station, and magma pump stack, though, as magma pass through those.

I've found no way to say "yes, I know I'm digging above/below water/hot stone. Keep digging without cancellation". My partial work around is to change the world gen parameters so there's at least two levels between caverns and 3 between the 3:rd cavern and the magma sea, allowing the digging of transit tunnels without spam.

How is magma a spoiler now?

PatrickLundall:
I believe the grate idea is similar to how they're used in safe wells (you can't overlay buildings). However, upwards that necessitates a screwpump.

And sideways, they're probably getting completely submerged and thus swimmable.

I agree on using a bridge. Dropping a bit of water might work on sealing up as well for later.

I knew submerged fortifications were swimmable, but I didn't think wall grates were? If they are, I don't see what they would be used for apart from ensuring xsocksx (and drowned goblins) aren't pushed downstream, and I'd probably use a floor grate for that anyway?

Using a floor grate on a lower level (with the required pump) seems like an over complicated solution to a problem: thus, a rather dwarven solution...

You can seal up your bridge with obsidian, but the only reason I can come up with that might require it is if retiring fortresses either causes bridges to be lowered, or magma to flow where it isn't supposed to, while a wall would block that.

I excavate a pool under my workshop area and pump magma out of my source into the pool through a tunnel.  I do have a raising bridge to block off the pool from the outside world, but I also enclose the screw pump so that magma creatures would have to destroy it to enter the tunnel, and they don't seem inclined to want to bother.

I leave enough tunnel (both linear and vertical) between the pump and the pool so that I can later tap the same tunnel for other uses.

Nah, I meant using the water dropping rather instead of as opposed to in addition to a bridge.

I guess submerged fortifications, wall grates and vertical bars behave the same way when it comes to pathing, and at least do behave identically with respect to being able to be pushed through them (which I suspect is linked to swimming pathing).

Granted, I have not tested swimming through grates yet - at bit of an askance on how to test, train dwarf to competent swimmer then put pump, ramp, grate, dwarf in a sealed room in that order? - so take it with bit of salt.

I always embark on volcanoes (because I am lazy) but use the pump method because it seems easier to secure compared with directly tapping the pipe.  It doesn't take all that much longer and there is little danger from wildlife.

I use the Design 3 with minecarts, to bring magma to the surface.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Magma#Design_3:_Minimalist_magma_moving

Dwarves can carry a nickel minecart with magma without problem (but at slow speed, because the excessive weight).
In my fortress I make a channel, build a Track stop that dump in the channel direction, and make a hauling route with a magma minecart, and change with another magma minecart.
Two minecart give 4/7 magma, enough for activate the magma workshop. The workshop don't consume the magma.

There has been a way for quite a while actually.

Step 1:
In your DF folder open the data folder and find announcements.txt
Scroll through that to find:
[DIG_CANCEL_WARM:A_D:D_D:P:R]
[DIG_CANCEL_DAMP:A_D:D_D:P:R]

Step 2:
Remove :P:R
It should now read
[DIG_CANCEL_WARM:A_D:D_D]
[DIG_CANCEL_DAMP:A_D:D_D]

P = Pause, R = Recenter
With these gone it will still cancel the designations to prevent flooding your fort but it wont pause the game or move your screen.

You can reduce the footprint to 1 pump and no drainage by pushing carts over a valid ramp into a valid ramp+fake ramp pit full of magma (the cart will fill up on the first valid ramp tile in the magma and checkpoint through the fake ramp out of magma).

At the cost of setting up routes for each cart twice, granted.

@Pirate Santa: Your proposal solves the wrong problem, unfortunately. The main problem is that the work is cancelled, while the notifications are just additional annoyances triggered by the cancellations. We want to get rid of the cancellations themselves (which should get rid of the notifications as a side effect).

I believe there is such a thing as disabling temperature calculations (mods?) and that it might solve that problem, but might also create others

disabling temperature is not a mod but an init file setting
