Undead livestock bypassing traps?
« on: July 08, 2016, 08:42:24 am »

So I just lost my fortress to an evil cloud that turned my livestock into husk that proceeded to kill each other and any dwarf that got near. I had setup traps in the entrance of the fortress but the last husk, as yak cow if I remember correctly, walked over them without the traps triggering.

Does anyone know if this is supposed to happen? I can imagine that because it was a fortress animal and those ignore the traps the undead version keeps the ability but I certainly didnt expect it.

Could be also that it moved too fast for weapon traps to trigger.

I assume the traps weren't jammed by the other undead? Also, enemies can jump at nearby targets, which can cause them to pass over traps (at least cage traps).

It was single undead, moving slowly through an emply hallway full of traps.

I read the DF wiki entry on undead and found a very FUNy fact: "Creatures capable of evading traps or bypassing locked doors retain that ability as undead" "Enthralled dwarves from your fortress are not affected by traps"

So it seems that any creature that was able to evade the traps is turned into an undead, like thieves but also fortress inhabitants, pets, livestock, etc., they retain this capacity.

The question now is if this should be an actual feature (played like husks remembering where the traps are) or it should be considered a bug.

Hm, thralling is different from being raised, though. Given that bones from undead former sapients can be used for crafting and go into the refuse stockpile, while body parts from their non undead form would go into the corpse stockpile, I'd consider it a bug if it affects "regular" undead, but a (cool) feature if husks are treated differently from regular undead.
This requires some !!SCIENCE!! to determine where (still?) sapient husks go: the refuse or the corpse stockpile?

That is a fact that i knew for some time now but i never thought about the trouble it can cause.

That they can bypass locked doors, on the other hand, is new to me. Thats FUN!

I didnt face this problem because dwarfs and animals cannot open locked doors but a kobold thief husk could become horrible to deal with.
