Trump is mad at chicagos mayor

Sounds more frustrated than mad.

Anyway, Trump has been claiming 'inside info' on the hacks and that 'he knows stuff'. He's also said that he'll talk about it on Tuesday or Wenesday after he has that security briefing thing, so, he's either talking about the intel briefings or he is bullshitting, I think he is just bullshitting though.

Also, officials on media have been saying that the hacks have Russian digital fingerprints all over them. More specifically, the code for the malware was written in a cyrillic language keyboard. I know that doesn't neccesarily scream that the Russian government is behind it since Russia isn't the only one that uses cyrillic script. Certainly eliminates China.

edit: Though this article does say that it was linked to specific Russian keyboards, but I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.

Pretty massive gamble given that Trump is pretty dang unpredictable.

Looks like the relationship between Trump and North Korea is going to be pretty tough.

He's already said that he'd be tough on NK, tougher than Obama is anyway. While it's definetly some pre-emptive blustering and stomping his foot down, it's certainly not the, *ahem*, diplomatic, way to do it.

That said, chances are good that NK will be the first major international crisis not of his own making. Whether he ends up making things worse is another matter entirely.

Also, the whole willing to sit down with him seems partially as a 'lets try something different'.

Speaking as Bay 12's foremost expert on North Korea, that doesn't indicate anything. If you'll recall, the glory that is DPRK Thread began with the threat to nuke America in 2012.

It's not all that possible for him to be tougher on North Korea than the United States already is, aside from embargoing. But North Korea is autarky focused anyway.

Ironically, a lot of the way Trump styles himself is similar to the Kims, as a larger-than-life unstoppable figure.

Doesn't Israel basically saturate the air with missiles? Long range missiles are a whole other thing to target than shorter range.

Yes. The US has invested significant efforts into the creation of the ship-based Aegis Combat System which can shoot down targets at and above the typical speed of a nuclear missile, as well as the ground-based THADD. The former has been distributed to various allies, including Japan, and already has significant presence around the Korean peninsula. The latter has an installation present in South Korea but has not been fully deployed, a task that will fall to...*sigh*...Trump over the coming year.

That is a very complicated question. We certainly have the ability to shoot down SRBMs such as the SCUD, but IRBMs are an order of magnitude more difficult to hit, and ICBMs an order of magnitude more difficult than that. The issue comes down to speed - to get longer ranges, you need a greater suborbital entry velocity, which (for a missile) translates directly into a higher reentry velocity. An RV from an ICBM can literally outrun a conventional explosion - the blast wave and shrapnel from an exploding missile warhead will not be fast enough to catch it, which means that there are only three ways to take one out. Either you need a direct skin-skin impact (extremely hard to do at those speeds - hitting a rifle bullet with another rifle bullet is an easier feat, although computer control helps), an explosion placed in front of the missile (almost as difficult), or you need to use a nuclear-tipped interceptor (which has obvious political problems). The absolute latest version of the Standard Missile fired from Navy AEGIS ships, the SM-3 IIA, has been tested with moderate success against simulated IRBM attacks, but not against ICBMs, and the known simulations did not take MIRV systems or decoy warheads into account. That's why Star Wars put so much effort into energy weapons, which are much easier to hit with, but the power levels needed to hit an ICBM are right at the edge of what we can do today.


The only assured chance of stopping one, even the sort of chicken-wire and bondo type a country like NK would be able to put together, would be a nuclear first-strike at the launch sites.

Not sure a nuke is actually needed to take out a silo. We have precision missiles these days, so, why not a bunker-buster type thing?

Of course though, nobody's ever tried (outside of simulations) to take out a nuclear launch silo with a nuke or otherwise.

Depends on the silo. They're pretty valuable bits of real estate, and there's a pretty big gap between ordinary penetrating bombs (which it is possible to armor against with enough engineering) and the special monsters they built for the Gulf War out of obsolete 8" gun barrels (which, last I checked, were only usable by non-stealth aircraft). Not only that, but mobile missiles are essentially immune to the GPS guided weapons that are a B-2's only viable precision munition, because they can only hit fixed coordinates, and a moving target won't be at those coordinates when the weapon hits. The B-2 lacks the laser emitters that the F-117 had (which would potentially allow target tracking), and the other various types of PGM would expose the bomber too much to detection and destruction. A SRAM or gravity bomb attack is much more likely to succeed.

Missile Command was more realistic than I thought!
Not sure if the missiles literally outran explosions in the original, but it was certainly a factor.  Pretty sure it happened in some renditions, so you really wanted to trigger explosions well ahead of the missiles for them to run into.  Explosions just about as large as the missiles themselves, implying nuclear payloads.
