I've heard such horrid things about how the USA is a horrendously obese nation because fresh produce is unavailable for distribution.

Wait what? I've never heard this before, unless we have a different definition of fresh produce or something. America is obese because bad food is super cheap and easy, anyone can talk into a fast food store and get 1500 calories for like five bucks in two minutes. But we're not lacking fruit. Equally in grocery stores there's absolute tons of fruit all over the place. The store I go too is typically something like 25% fresh fruit and vegetables.

Maybe it varies by location...? I guess if you're living out of a gas station or something there's not going to be much fresh produce.

Edit: I'd totally believe you if you told me that Americans eat less fresh produce then average, but it doesn't seem like it's from lack of access, just lack of interest.

There's plenty of fresh food produced and available for sale. The problem is that it is very common that people can't get to it. Truly local grocery stores have been driven to the brink of extinction by Wal*Mart and the grocery giants, and those stores tend to be big and located fairly centrally. I live in a neighborhood where there is still a local store just down the street (although it is terrible for meat and has only a fairly small selection of fresh (and no frozen) vegetables, and is mostly noted for the spectacular selection of traditional black and Mexican staples), but let us assume that it were to close down. If that happened, the nearest grocery store is about twenty minutes away - by car. By bus, it is about two hours, three by foot. Given the small amount of food that is practical to carry (not a problem when you have a ten minute walk to the store, but a very big one if you have to take three buses or walk back), it might as well be on the far side of the moon if you don't have (or can't afford gas for) a car.

Isn't the optimal scenario that the two deal with each other? I mean, hell, I'm pretty sure the militias would act as domestic counter-terror organizations if we wanted to try to get them to be. Foreign invaders are basically their wet dream.
Sadly they don't occupy the same social environments. Eurojihadis stick to massive cities where they can better be lost in a sea of people (and to better have targets), Snekmilitias stick to rough peripheries where they can better be lost in a sea of trees (and to better not be a target). That would make a sick survival game though, where you play as a civilian trying to keep their job and life together in a city under Eurojihadi occupation, but if you flee too far away from them into the wilds, /k/ begins hunting you for your meat and tendons; thus you must walk a tightrope whilst looking at the proverbial rock and hard place

*EDIT
On review, if I had to choose between eurojihadi occupation and being in the wilds in the dark with a /k/ommando whispering 'give me your tendons' I think I would choose the eurojihadi

The plot of the game would be built around a resistance movement aimed around getting the two to destroy each other by tactical application of blasphemy at city perimeters; once the two groups notice each other, of course, they will fight to the death.

-snip-

Yeah, it's a sad state of affairs. I personally know someone who came from one of the poorest parts of Columbus who had no idea of the existence of pears or cauliflower, both pretty common foods, and had heard of but never seen a banana in person until she'd been enrolled in the local University.

-snop-

I much prefer the /k/ommandos, tbh. With Eurojihadis I'd just get beheaded for my religion or at the very least thrown off a building for having long hair. I at least have a chance of blending with the rednecks, and if I do I'll have all the tendons and ammunition I could ever want.

Ah, but the jihadis will only behead you, maybe. Sea of people to get lost in works for you too. The /k/ommandos will leave you to bleed out in the woods from where your Achille's tendon used to be.

And neither group will believe you when you say you're one of them. Jihadis won't believe in white muslims, and the /k/ommandos won't believe you're a patriot because you speak English at a fifth-grade level.

On the grocery stores: That's interesting, I didn't know that was such an issue. (I wanta interject a comment on how that map is not very elucidating, as if I lived a very short distance further down the street I'd technically fall within a food desert despite one grocery store a quick walk away and three more a reasonably short bus/drive away. But that's not really me trying to refute the idea as a whole, since it makes sense, just annoyed at that particular bit and feeling nitpicky.) I'm somewhat wondering how bad the situation is in comparison to other countries, but I guess that doesn't matter so much as the fact that it is a bad situation that I wasn't even aware of. I have been enlightened I guess, so, thanks.

In other news, and oddly timely considering the discussion from earlier, California continues to be California.

Someone should probably go and check on them, I think the drought is starting to affect the way people think.

And in a good way?

This seems like a child protection act that protects minors from being charged with prostitution (which... in California would... well.. ruin their lives)

What is the crazy part? I am sure there is a crazy part somewhere, I just need help with it being pointed out.

Because it makes it legal for minors to prostitute themselves and engage in other sex work. The stated intent is to prevent charging trafficking victims with a crime, but they don't ever get charged anyway and no jury would ever in a million years convict them even if they were.

Two things
1) The bill writes out that a child who engages in sex trafficking can be put into protective custody. So it isn't that a child who is whoring themselves out is simply free to do it.
2) Do not underestimate a Judge and Jury's ability to convict someone of a crime no matter how "unfair" it actually is. Since them going "Not guilty" would be them going rogue.

Yeah, I have to agree on this one. Legal inertia can overcome even the most common sense of "would never convict". And I can definitely think of multiple kinds of people who would actively seek conviction if on such a jury even outside of that.

I'm thinking back to that one case of a woman suing her 8-year old orphaned nephew because she needed to establish some sort of legal intent over her dead sibling's will, and was publicly crucified for it.

If it happens, then, surely you have some examples? All I can find when I search for it is people being imprisoned for doing the trafficking.

And even if it does happen, if they wanted to protect trafficking victims they should have said trafficking victims. No distinction is made here, it's just decriminalizing sex work for minors. Engaging them is still illegal, yeah, so I don't expect underage prostitutes on every streetcorner or some shit like that, but it's not like this will make it any easier to get those people either.

Well you wouldn't have any from Canada because the child protection act forbids this information from being made public... But are you asking for a law case where a minor is convicted with prostitution?

To be honest at first glance I thought it was making it legal for minors to hire prostitutes.

I was very confused
