Is it that surprising? I met a chinese heart surgeon in Germany who spake English with a Russian accent because he had spent a lot of time in Kazakhstan (he was an ethnic Kazakh and muslim. Good drinker too, he emptied half my fifth of whiskey.)

LW, I'm a Texan, if I want to wear a cowboy hat, nobody will say squat for two reasons: I look good in it, and 99% chance I'm carrying. A fedora or bowler or whatnot doesn't carry the same "you might get shot for questioning it" effect, but I look better in them than cowboy hats.

Bowler hats are so 19th century (and early 20th) though.

It is surprising because not many people from Kazakhstan move out of Kazakhstan

As for the gif: black fedora on a pasty fat guy... I don't envy your imagination for jumping to that instead of say, Indiana Jones, movies from the 40's and 50's, or even the early 20th century women's rights movement, if I'm wearing a black hat it will be a felt derby or bowler with a nice suit, I like lighter colors for hats though, again, Texas.

@Kot: I've gone swimming in Texas in the winter because it got hot, just saying, occasionally it gets really cold for brief periods, but generally it is never ushankas weather.

As for style, confidence is far more important than what is or isn't in fashion, I know what I look good in, I know when other men look good in something, and that something is never a baseball cap, but maybe I've never seen someone wear it as anything but some crap to keep the sun out of their eyes or a derpy status symbol. Interestingly they are also actually from the 19th century, so clearly we need new hat designs!
