We've missed some important developments at the Trump campaign.

"Trump-Pence: Fuck America."
Perhaps the most homoerotic thing to happen to the GOP since Santorum.

Which is something considering the GOP platform has been described (by the presumably intensely confused republican LGBT group) as the most anti-LGBT it's been in the last 160 or so years, i.e. the entirety of the party's existence.

Edit: If you recall Vietnam, a highly organized military fought a bunch of farmers with inadequate equipment and got their asses handed to them through extensive use of ambush tactics.  You don't have to be a professional to be effective.

That is an interesting take on Vietnam.  Generally they are not described as having "kicked ass" militarily.

Life is become sitcom.

And so few people seem to actually be processing what is happening.

I'd like to wake up now. The Matrix is having some bugs. Or the experiment is going horribly horribly well

Really? Few thousand farmers take on the US army, and win? Sounds like some pretty solid asskicking to me.

Depends on your priorities. Guerrilla warfare is only meaningfully effective on the strategic level. Tactically, the guerrilla forces are certain to be slaughtered on a regular basis by their military opponents, and yet the structure of that military causes them to be convinced they must give up.

Effective in that context, but I doubt it much feels like winning.

Oh yeah, it would suck pretty bad on the ground. But that probably applies to both sides? Americans definitely wouldn't have felt like they were winning, either.

Just that it's not "everyday farmers fight the US Army and triumph over them" but "everyday farmers repeatedly killed en mass by US Army, who are so riddled with uncertainty and paranoia by farmer tactics that they give up and go home".

Military vs. insurgency is actually quite brilliantly dystopian in how it manages maximum trauma for both parties, regardless of who wins.

Yeah, but at least we learned a lesson about getting involved in protracted slogs against insurgent groups... not sure what the lesson is... maybe related to the protest movements that gained a lot of attention at that time, and... their current, uh, I'm loathe to say evolution as people tend to think of it as suggesting progress rather than change, let's go with incarnation maybe, and their... methods.

The casualties on each side were roughly on par if I recall.

Yeah, but at least we learned a lesson about getting involved in protracted slogs against insurgent groups... not sure what the lesson is...

"Let's just use drone strikes instead"
The brilliant thing about Drone Strikes is it solves half of the Vietnam problem instantly. No more body bags. No one gets their underwear in a knot about "environmental damage" like with Napalm, and yet it is almost more effective at terrorizing the populace. And if the guerillas have any notions that they can somehow win, they better get used to the sight of drones circling overhead, because. Ho Chi Minh won because he knew he could win the war of minds; not the minds of the Vietnamese, but the minds of Americans, and convince them that the war could not be won. That argument is a hell of a lot harder to pull off when the war involves unfeeling drones without families, immune to fear, morale, anger, and any of the things a guerilla force is supposed to induce in a conventional army. In fact, drones are probably the best way for a conventional army today to use "guerilla-like" tactics against guerrillas, inducing the same sort of anger, fear, etc.

In short, I believe all the horrifying quagmires of the future should be fought almost entirely with drones.
