Police officers in Baton Rouge have been the victim of a shooting near the police headquarters. Mayor reports the incident is still ongoing. "There's a lot going on and we are trying to find out what's happening". Possibly there are 3 dead officers.

Presidents can bargain. Clinton could put cash repatriation on the table if Republicans agree to put that towards infrastructure. Ryan probably wants that. Then pres and Congress bargain over kinds of infrastructure. If Republicans won't do infrastructure she tells them to fuck off like Obama did. Or trump is President and we get repatriation without infrastructure.

I normally avoid this/these thread(s), and I'm not trying to start any arguments here, but my mother seems to think that the ongoing unrest and tensions between people and the police is some kind of plot by Obama to remain in office indefinitely, and she immediately shut me down when questioned her on how that's even possible. Where, exactly, does the Constitution allow for the President to suspend the Constitution because people are a bit angry? At the very least, that sounds like it needs congressional approval.

This.

It's very unlikely Obama is enough of a puppet master to be controlling all of this, and he'd still need congressional approval, but it is possible if this escalates to an extreme degree.

It... doesn't. Maybe there could be something done with a state of emergency or something, but, uh, it's been a lot worse in the past without that sort of thing happening, and it'd be regional at most anyway. Like, that's cities literally burning down level stuff, not pretty minor rioting at its worst (so far, anyway). Regardless, no, there's not going to be much more buggering of the constitution over the current police issues than there already is, and it's fairly unlikely the dems'll be the ones pushing for it anyway.

Also has she even seen Obama lately? Like most two term presidents, I can pretty much guarantee you he's counting the days until he can stuff this shit in a box and go home.

And that, I guess. Color me doubtful it's going to be invoked over stuff that's largely causing less property damage than your average sports riot.

Yeah, pretty much. Unless a full race-war breaks out (unlikely) or something, that's not gonna happen.

3 dead, 3 wounded confirmed.

They're saying 2 shooters, but the situation seems "contained" now.

Like I said, I'm glad to see that she has actually given some thought to the problem, but that manifesto is so vague and open to interpretation that it could mean nearly anything.
That's a bit uncharitable.  It could have been far more vague, and I see quite a lot of differentiation of intent that (whilst I suspect it will get watered down by opposition, which is probably pre-planned) sets out goals a lot more complicated than "We'll build a wall" and detailed than "Make America great again", not that the other guy hasn't got some details behind him, but his podium language (I do try to keep abreast of these, even this side of the Pond) always seems to be a few notches down on the specifics and clarity so as not to blind his supporters with 'politics'.

Also beware very specific and unambiguous pledges...   "We will have a referendum..."
You guys should have referendums more often, they're top bants

Like most two term presidents, I can pretty much guarantee you he's counting the days until he can stuff this shit in a box and go home.

And I've been counting down the days until he goes out of office so I can stop hearing the tinfoil hat nonsense about him seizing the US and becoming King / Emperor Obama.  People pretty frequently say that Obama is cultivating the racial tensions, but never really explain how he's doing that.  I guess they're white and he isn't, so that's all that's needed.

I get to hear that a lot in the rural parts of South Carolina, and it's tiresome.  Whoever takes over after him, at least that will stop.

Mostly, yeah.

I know that no matter who goes in, the paranoid delusions and conspiracy theories won't stop.  There's plenty going around for Trump and Hillary already, anyway.

That, and those same people who have been making the Emperor Obama claims have been saying that they'll just appoint him as a supreme court justice next where he can keep destroying the US and turning it into a third world country "like his daddy wanted," but at least supreme court justices can't directly take control of the country like the president theoretically could.

So, hey, at least the crazy theories will change and probably mostly be about other people.

Did the TV news mention that Trump did not in fact oppose the Iraq War?

Yeah, specifically that he doesn't exactly have a record on it until recently. I have, however, mostly stopped paying attention and it is msnbc
