Part of the loss is from automation and efficiency improvements, what used to take 100 people could take maybe 50 to do now. But that can't explain all of it.

edit: Ninja'd by alway.
The other part of why it doesn't work for *society* is that new jobs are entirely based on having an education. As for me, I'm a programmer; I make more than 5 people working full times jobs at minimum wage. For people like me, life isn't all that bad, and talk of stagnant wages feels almost academic. On the other hand, a federal minimum wage worker could dose themselves with meth to hold down 3 full time jobs by never sleeping, and they would still only make a little over half of what I do. If you do not have a college education, a class of people which includes a full !! 60% !! of the United States, you are competing with robots, and the new jobs they create may as well not exist as far as you're concerned. Add the cost of university on top of that (which means years of full-time student-ing on top of any job you have, plus more bills from tuition and materials; $37k debt is now the average at graduation), and all those displaced by automation can't even retool to access the jobs created by it.

Make America great again: who needs an environment anyway edition.

Energy Independence

The Trump Administration will make America energy independent.  Our energy policies will make full use of our domestic energy sources, including traditional and renewable energy sources.  America will unleash an energy revolution that will transform us into a net energy exporter, leading to the creation of millions of new jobs, while protecting the country’s most valuable resources – our clean air, clean water, and natural habitats. America is sitting on a treasure trove of untapped energy. In fact, America possesses more combined coal, oil, and natural gas resources than any other nation on Earth. These resources represent trillions of dollars in economic output and countless American jobs, particularly for the poorest Americans.

Rather than continuing the current path to undermine and block America’s fossil fuel producers, the Trump Administration will encourage the production of these resources by opening onshore and offshore leasing on federal lands and waters. We will streamline the permitting process for all energy projects, including the billions of dollars in projects held up by President Obama, and rescind the job-destroying executive actions under his Administration.  We will end the war on coal, and rescind the coal mining lease moratorium, the excessive Interior Department stream rule, and conduct a top-down review of all anti-coal regulations issued by the Obama Administration.  We will eliminate the highly invasive "Waters of the US" rule, and scrap the $5 trillion dollar Obama-Clinton Climate Action Plan and the Clean Power Plan and prevent these unilateral plans from increasing monthly electric bills by double-digits without any measurable effect on Earth’s climate.  Energy is the lifeblood of modern society. It is the industry that fuels all other industries.  We will lift the restrictions on American energy, and allow this wealth to pour into our communities. It’s all upside: more jobs, more revenues, more wealth, higher wages, and lower energy prices.

The Trump Administration is firmly committed to conserving our wonderful natural resources and beautiful natural habitats. America’s environmental agenda will be guided by true specialists in conservation, not those with radical political agendas.  We will refocus the EPA on its core mission of ensuring clean air, and clean, safe drinking water for all Americans.  It will be a future of conservation, of prosperity, and of great success.

@alway: Yeah, and also, it's not just a problem affecting the US, it's going to affect everybody around the world, just at different rates. Those same countries which are developing and industrializing and modernizing will hit the same things as well, probably sooner because there are fewer quality jobs to work with.

The argument comes right back to education and having access to those jobs that need more specialized skills.

Edit: I call BS on more resources than the rest of the world combined without reliable data to back that up We do have large amounts of coal and oil and gas accessable to us, yes, but 'rest of the world combined'? And I'll guess those 'true experts in environmental conservation' are the oil barons.

Yeeaah, that thing. True specialists indeed. The most special of specialists, the ones that have managed to convince themselves (or at least some people) that mankind has little to no effect on the environment :V

Still, few months before we see how bad it gets, or at least the window opens for it. I bet the mountain counties are going to love the mining restrictions lifted from their mountains, ahahaha.

Though damn, now that I think about it. If the guy actually does manage to spearhead killing the EPA and efforts like it, someone needs to make a map. An interactive map that tracks new reports of tap water catching fire or otherwise becoming unusable.

If he supported efforts to develop Fusion plants, that would be awsome. Though any results from that are likely to come well after he finishes his second term.

Why no love for nuclear :(
Something something decades long return on investment period something screwups something something waste storage something.

Though I guess more money into next gen stuff would be nice, yeah. Not so sure how nice in the face of across the board regulation gutting, though. Probably be safer and more productive to just rely on the other folks working on it for a few years.

Trump's alter-ego is a windup tin pot dictator. It requires contradictions to turn the key to stay alive.

That's obviously their plan for constructing a wall. Why do you think its height was getting bigger and bigger the further Trump was into his campaign? Because it's literally made out of contradictions! Each new contradiction adds 10 micro-feets to the wall!

Hell, maybe it's a job generating plan. If ten or fifteen percent of the country dies due to polluted infrastructure, that means the jobs they used to hold are now available! Plus think of all the new opportunities in healthcare and funerary services.

E: Though in retrospect, any plan pitch that ends in "think of all the new opportunities in healthcare and funerary services" is probably a pretty bad one.

China will breath easier at least if Trump has his way.

But you're going to get the "best" of both worlds: giant toxin-billowing factories like China has now, but without the pesky "jobs" that traditionally went along with that.
