(new player) Maximum Settings World Gen - Crash! :(
« on: July 05, 2016, 05:10:40 pm »

Well, I tried to generate a world at maximum settings.
Set them all, pressed y, turned off the monitor, went to bed for 4 hours...

When I came back, it had crashed on the 1050th year.

(Using LNP, it says DF is version 0.42.06; processor priority: Above Normal)
RAM: 8GB
CPU: i3-4160@3.60GHz
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
CPU Temperature throughout generation: 60-63 degrees Celsius (140-145.4 Fahrenheit)
CPU Temperature idle: 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit)

It is not impossible to generate, right?

Out of RAM, i guess.  Try a medium sized world or a shorter history.

The new 64 bit version won't have that problem (in theory).

DF has had a bug that causes it to sometimes crash when offloading/finalizing the generated world, and it's sometimes annoyingly frequent. Toady has fixed a world generation crash in the latest version, but I don't know if it's that one. I would also try to generate the world with DFHack disabled, as there is a suspicion it can increase the crash frequency, and I don't think it does anything useful during generation anyway (and then I'd re-enable it before embarking).

Thus, I suspect it's not a memory issue.

first you need to tell us if you used the basic generator or the advanced one. the basic one has lower maximum values compared to advanced

I used the one called 'Create New World!', not the one with 'advanced parameters'.

If this was caused by a lack of memory, it would work better in the new version. Essentially the newest update upgrades DF from 32 bit to 64 bit, which means that it can use all 8GB of your RAM, rather than just 4GB. You can download the newest version here.

Rather than just 2 GB, unless using Large Address Aware.

Not impossible, no. You are generally better off with a short history for performance reasons and potential megabeast fun anyway, though, unless you have a specific reason to want a long history.

Yeah, its an unfortunate truth that genning old worlds to play in is really not worth it unless its a specific goal to search for lore. The fps will be lowered and often a civ gobbles up all the others so there might be less caravans and perhaps even invaders.

Other benefits for long-ass worlds:
◙ Good, even legendary performers and scholars. You can embark with legendaries, even. I think the migrants are more likely to have goodies as well?
⛤ If you get dragons to share a lair in world-gen, I think they might breed? This gives them time to reach full size.
✯ It takes time for a town, forest retreat or dark fortress reach the largest size of 10-13k denizens + pets. For strongest invasions, you can't start in year 5 - must wait at least few centuries.
