I'm seeing some people say it's sediment from copper piping used to fill/filter the thing, but if that's what happened it must've been going on for a long time but had nowhere to go until it was filled up for the event. Maybe the filtration/filling system didn't drain properly, I guess, but it'd have to be pretty fucking bad to turn an Olympic size swimming pool that shade of green over the course of a few hours. I don't think algae could've grown so bad so quickly though, and I can't think of any other explanation either.

A bus with journalists has been either shot at or assailed with rocks. A few journalists were lightly injured by flying glass from broken windows. A police escort managed to get the journalists to the press center safely after the incident.
BBC reports that the windows broke from thrown rocks, but one of the bus passengers, retired US airforce captain Lee Michaelson, who is currently in Rio as a sports reporter for the female basketball team, says it most definitly were gunshots. "I know how gunfire sounds. I heard a very clear sound of a bullet impacting".

He sas that the bus driver an olympic staff are very badly trained. "The bus driver slowed down after the incident and stopped his bus at the side of the road. That's exactly the opposite of what should have been done in that situation. He should have put the pedal to the metal and got the hell out of there."

Meanwhile, Br's anti terrorism division of the fedeal police (akin to a br FBI) has arrested around 12 people and are keeping an eye on several others which come from pretty much every region of the country across 9 different states. The arrested suspects have sworn allegiance to IS and were apparently recruited through social media, and their profiles have shown religious, racial and gender intolerance. They were trying to organize guerrila tactics drills and acquire weapons. One of the suspects is apparently a teen, and a certain humanitarian/educational NGO may be involved in their recruitment and organization.

Operation Hashtag, as it is called, has confirmed that there is an active IS cell in Brazil which is currently trying to do attacks on the olympics, but also have several other plans for other important events and locations in Brazil.

Also it seems most if not all of the suspects have only recently converted to islam, and didn't agree with the generally peaceful stance of br's mosques.

My personal theory is that its related to the political turmoil and IS are just exploiting it and people are seriously looking at it as a way to get out of their shitty and impoverished situations. Hence speed converting to islam to get in bed with IS.

There would have to be lots of nutrients in the pool in order for algae to bloom that quickly.

Also, what KIND of algae? Some types of algae are toxic when they bloom like that.
