Jann's ear continued to twitch as Cecil and Siegfried continued their conversation. Before long, the hunter's teeth were grinding, and he caught up to speaking range with the pair.
"Hey- stow it, will you two? There're enough whispers over there to usurp a throne."

"Of course. Anything I can do to help a friend and a Hero of Justice!"
Then Jann.

"Ah! Hello, friend! We were just discussing things of no particular importance!"

Gregory raises an eyebrow at the formality of the maid. waving off her apology, he continued

"I may be incorrect, but I don't believe that Lord Peritz would send a noncombatant civilian along on what he knows is a possibly dangerous mission. Several of the other civilians in the group are serving as Miss Peritz bodyguard, would I be right in my assumption you are to serve a similar role? And, if that is indeed the case, I would like to inquire what abilities you have for this role." he finishes.

"I suppose we do look rather suspicious. . . Very well."

Jann rose an eyebrow, then lowered it as he looked at Cecil.
: "Right. Classic. That excuse won't work next time. Can't say I care for the skulking, but cut the whispering! We've got a long road to follow and low, unidentifiable voices screams 'ambush' to me. If you're going to talk, talk normally. At least then I can pick out suspicious noises from the din that follows you around."

"If you have some conundrum that needs to be solved, I'm sure you'll be able to find plenty of opinions in this group if you simply inquire out loud."

Cecil nods, saluting dramatically.

"Ah! Will do-"
He catches himself, clearing his throat.

"Ah! Will do, compatriot!"

Cecil, right. Jann held back a sigh.
: "...I'm going ahead." The hunter wasted no time in picking up his pace, reaching well ahead of the front of the pack.

"It was a small, but personal matter, but we have solved it." He gestures to the road ahead. "I believe Jann has the right idea; it is going to take us some time to make this trip, and we do not have as much of it as we may like."

Cecil nods enthusiastically.

"That's fair."
With that, he whips out a book, scribbling something inside it before putting it away again.

"Pace yourself. In an ambush, we'd be better off not fighting tired."

But she quickened her steps and began to move ahead as well.

"Tell the Captain I'll be scouting ahead if he needs me."

"You are correct. I am trained in both heal staff use and am capable of defending myself if need be." As she said this, she pulled her heal staff off of her back and produced a simple throwing dagger. "I hope you do not mind, but priority will be given to Lady Shaelynn."

And so they went.

~~Chapter 5: The Usual Traveler Woe~~

For the next two and half days, the group travelled comfortably across the Overseasland countryside, the well-maintained roads and inns every so often causing them no discomfort and allowing them to rest when needed.

On the third day of their journey, a helpful old peasant lady mentioned that they can cut through the nearby forest to save themselves about two hours of time rather than go around it...

It was very old and very majestic-looking forest. Tall, wide trees created a ceiling that blocked most of the light. Squirrels, birds and other animals made it their home, sometimes they could be noticed amongst the branches.

But even here the humanity made it's way, carving and flattening a path right through the middle of the forest. The ground was stomped and the sides of the road were cleared of trees as well.

Something was not right, however; local animals, once loud and aplenty, now were hard to spot...

Gregory paused his in admiration of the the local flora when he noticed the lack of fauna.

"Hum... Something doesn't seem right... Am I crazy, or it too silent all of a sudden?" he said, looking around the area, concern on his face.
