I just added embark profiles to dwarves, humans and kobolds. You know, the usual stuff, pick a pre-set of items, skills and pets at embark.

For example:
Kobold Glass Embark - Contains all kind of sand, coal, raw green glass, etc, everything to get started with a glass-themed fort.
Human Military Corps - Contains 7 different weapons, 7 armors, and some military skills, used to reclaim a fort-gone-wrong.

I wanted to ask the community to come up with cool ideas for themed embarks or challenging embarks. Everyone knows the "no items/pets/skills" at embark challenge, but what else can you do?

Stuff like:
King of the Hill - Get 6 useless nobles with social skills and 1 warrior, who must protect them. Gruff warrior injured the pride of some high-ranking noble in the mountainhomes, is send on a suicide mission.
Merchants gone wrong - Lots of trading skills, finished goods, cloth, gems, gold... but no useful stuff. Your wagon broke on route and now you have to make the best of it.

Suggestions welcome! :)

I'd be happy if anyone wanted to help crowd source some Orcish embark sets too -- either an updated take on some of the old loadouts or coming up with some new ones.

I adore doing Glass Embarks for Kobolds. I actually custom build most of my worlds now with Perfect World to have lots of Sandy Deserts

Realistic city

As humans, you must embark by a river emptying into an ocean. You must live by trade, trading nearly everything you have for things you don't have. You must dig canals coming from the river, and build a few boats.
Build a huge market square with all of the guilds and markets, with a foriegn district for all foriegn stuff. You must not fight with traps. No traps allowed, and war animals must not be used much. Nearly all of your fighting force must come fom your troops, whose armour should have the stmbol of your government on the breastplates. You must build a cathedral with all the temples, and a library. There should be a humongous castle somewhere also.

Your aim is to reach the status of capital, complete with king/queen.

That is not how that works.

Embark profiles are saved settings of your selection of items, skills and pets, using the ~1300 points you have at embark.

Something simple

Lost hunters - Orcs. Bows and spears and associated skills, little or no food, a pack of dire wolves, no seeds or plants. Maybe a pick or an axe to get building mats.
Castle builders - Humans. Stone blocks and masonry skills. No seeds but plenty of food.
Cattle ranch - Humans. Couple of cows to start your ranch, some seeds, an axe. Milking and butchering skills?
Fungus farmers - Dwarves. All kinds of underground seeds, A few pairs of DDD creatures, a pick. planting skill?

Monastery: scribe, scholar, bookmaking skills, paper-making seeds, just enough seeds to get by
No-Longer Travelling Musicians: devoted performers, skilled brewer, instruments, lots of booze to get a tavern up quickly. Good for establishing multiracial forts

One question about embark profiles: they're dumb, right?  Like, not as in "boo, embark profiles", but like, the computer does zero work in evaluating your dwarves' attributes before assigning them a collection of skills, correct?  I know that no in-file directives about attribute preferences exist in embark profiles, but is the executable doing any work like that?  I've always avoided including skills in my embark profiles just because I assume the computer is prone to make my weakest flimsiest dwarf the axedwarf.

They ignore attributes and castes. Just like I do at most embarks, most of the times I dont give anyone skills at all. They are a waste of points. Besides, you can still alter the profiles before you embark.

i find myself taking just what i need usually, a pair of pickaxes , a regular axe. 7 of each type of seed i plan on using (pig tails, black truffles for dye, maybe a cave wheat) some 10 meat and 20 drinks. and a vermin catcher and just roll from there. adding too it is bloat. taking away from it is itemless embark.

sometimes i take 7 pickaxes and carve the hell out of my fortress before summer,

sometimes i bring enough iron ore to make full sets of steel platemail on site

the only skills i pre assign are apprasier and armor user, sometimes grower, and i don't bother looking at who'd be best at it they eventually like it =)

usually when i start a fort i dig down under the soil and make a small shelter, enoughto survive but not thrive. digging down to magma relatively straight down and build the real fort there, never really a fan of making a lava pump to the surface.. thats something you only wanna do once lol.

i am guilty of using reveal and planning a shaft to magma without opening caverns, in turn i don't use adamantite unless my site is only copper (which happens 9 times out of 10 for some reason iron hates me). but even then i try to use bronze or alchemy to make steel or mithril before abusing candy.

Embark profile : Cavern Start,  1 axe. little food and drink. 3 armor user 1 grower/herbalist, iron ores and stones to make at least 3 suits of steel plate and weapons, pair of breeding vermin catchers. idea is : set up on the surface make the chain to produce steel, chop trees for fuel, everyone does everything until you can set up the real fort in the caves should be able to and move down before summer.

Yeah, I mostly just make sure to have at least two competent miners because I once had some food rot in the wagon and was quite traumatized.  But if the executable were doing evaluations of the dwarves before assigning roles, I'd pay attention to skills more.

Would there be any interest in embark profiles for a few standard nonstandard (heh) embark profiles?  I almost always do 13 dwarf embarks.  It occurred to me that probably no one else does when I was reading through all the 2-pick embark suggestions and just thinking "How do you leave with less than five picks?"   :P

Choosing Tolkien over Disney cannot be anything other than honorable.   8)  (Though, that excuse only strictly functions for dwarf embarks.)
