Any way to "fix" a breached volcano?
« on: June 30, 2016, 07:08:51 pm »

I recently reclaimed a fort after five or so years of not playing it.  The fort was on a volcano, and apparently something happened while I was gone that caused the top of the volcano to be breached, allowing delicious magma to spill out all over the mountain.  Fortunately, the flow does seem to hit a limit where it evaporates before it can flood the whole map, but it's still rather inconvenient to my FPS to have a constant magmafall spraying across one side of the mountain, despite the excellent aesthetics.

Any way for me to cap this flow?  I was considering obsidian as one possible solution.

- Obsidianizing the breach is probably the most practical solution.
- Another one is to dig to redirect the flow through an off the map fortification, possibly with a drawbridge to close it once you're done (or just obsidianization), use the now dried area to build a wall, and then close the drain once the volcano sealing wall has been built..
- A third one is an array of pumps that removes the magma (possibly via Portable Drains) while you build the plugging wall.

Alternatively, breach the volcano at a much lower level, after setting up a sealable drainage. Safest (though exploity) method would be using the ramp-under-bridge method, across multiple z-levels for faster drainage. Once the level drops below the level of the upper breach, plug it with walls, then close the drainage to allow the volcano to refill.

Obsidian casting is probably the easiest and most aesthetically pleasing option if you have easy access to water, though.

Ignore the problem and declare it to be fixed. Then, demand a table in your bedroom.

Then, demand a table in your bedroom.

So you can eat while you are sleeping?
