The location right above the clown car sounds good to me, at least until it can be cast out of obsidian, if that ends up happening. What does it say about the fortress that the god with the largest number of worshipers presides over nightmares and the night? Although, he hasn't actually done anything nightmarish, like cursing anyone.

The murky pool had a more practical purpose: refill any water lost to "mist" in the waterfall.
<snip>
However, design #2 really is quite a nice one.  <snip>

Conserving water isn't a problem, since I can get water from the aquifer easily enough (which is why the central tower still has pump stacks built-in).  Design #2 was my preference, as well.  I've added an out channel to the northern side, feeding back into the nearest of the central pump stacks.  Now I just have to actually re-build the pumps.

The location right above the clown car sounds good to me, at least until it can be cast out of obsidian, if that ends up happening. What does it say about the fortress that the god with the largest number of worshipers presides over nightmares and the night? Although, he hasn't actually done anything nightmarish, like cursing anyone.

Putting it down in the magma layers will actually make it relatively straightforward to cast it in obsidian to begin with.  As for the number of worshippers and lack of cursing...I have a story explanation for that, which will be in the next update.

Here's the design I've come up with.  Let me know if you want to tweak it.

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

03 Limestone 89

We are just about ready to build the magma workshops, as soon as we get some more clear glass blocks.

Now to dig out the minecart junction and some of the stockpiles.  First up, the clay repository, since those need to come all the way down from the surface.

08 Limestone 89

Well, at least we have plenty of leather for her to work with.

09 Limestone 89

She only grabbed two pieces of leather?  Then again, she isn’t the most creative dwarf.  I just hope it’s not another unwearable, like Sodel’s loincloth.

13 Limestone 89

Feb has worked quickly, and proudly presented her artifact…helm?

That…that’s actually useful!

And Feb clearly ascribes to the “less is more” belief system.  This will be proudly displayed, until a Champion earns the right to wear it.
--------------------

15 Limestone 89

The Pillars of Ink, patrolling the ramparts, gave the warning.

Lovely.  We’re about to get another impossible demand.  Lotu headed off to give the necessary orders.

18 Limestone 89

I never look forward to this.

Salveluck?  Lotu pulled out the southern map, studying it for a moment.  That was the southernmost of the surviving outposts.  But, it’s far enough away that we don’t have to worry.

Mindful of Echoworked’s instructions the previous year, this year’s list was pitifully short.  “Next year we’d like some steel bars, and both guineafowl and peafowl.”

He caught Echoworked’s look.  “Look, none of that is very heavy.  In fact, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what we ship out to Bomrek every fall.  If we succeed in getting back under, we’re going to want them.”

Echoworked shrugged a shoulder and added the list to his folder.

Pulling out another sheet, he handed it to Lotu.  “Swordgangs now has 64 dwarves, and these are Bomrek’s requests.”

I called it.  More anvils that we can’t make.  Not to mention the maces.  Could this day get any worse?

While Lotu sat glaring at Bomrek’s list, nursing a tankard of date wine, Echoworked headed off to inspect the various herds and flocks, escorted by the ever-vigilant Sigun.

In fact, he had arrived just in time for the festivities.

Returning to finish his meeting with Lotu, he slapped the latter on the back.  “Keep up the good work.”

“Are you sure we can’t re-visit the import agreement?”

Echoworked shook his head.  “I have my orders.  Besides, you don’t need it.”

Watching the liaison stride away, Lotu scowled.  What do you know what we need or don’t need?  You don’t spend enough time here to know!
--------------------

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

23 Limestone 89

I’ve worked out the numbers we need for the next quota.

Akrul can earn her keep and figure out how we’re going to make 128 anvils, when we sent away a king’s ransom in iron bars last year.  We definitely don’t have that much iron lying about anymore.

28 Limestone 89

The rag-tag group struggled through the jungle toward the stone wall rising welcomingly in the distance.  They had journeyed for so long, through such dangerous terrain after barely escaping with their lives to begin with, that the gray stone seemed almost unbelievable, even though they had known it, or something like it, lay at the end of their endless journey.

Pausing beneath a massive pecan tree, Catten Slingcleaned turned to watch as his companions trudged wearily past.

So few.  So many died in that last, desperate defense of Salveluck.  I’m lucky I got almost twenty of us out.  And I don’t blame the others for seeking safety in the Mountainhomes.  But according to my father-by-marriage, this is the safest place in Orom Nalish.  There is no war here.  No attacking goblins.  Here we’ll be able to live, and re-build our lives in peace.

The drawn, haggard faces and tattered clothing were visible signs of their dire straits.  And if that weren’t enough, their absurdly small burdens and lack of animals should have driven home the point.  In fact, at least one band of brigands that might have ambushed them on the journey north had changed their minds in favor of richer pickings.

Catten turned back toward the distant walls.  Just a little further now, then we can rest.  Falling in beside his family, he plodded wearily on.
--------------------

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

01 Sandstone 89

Where are we going to put them?  There are eleven of them, enough to put us officially into city status!  And what am I going to do with them?  Well, I guess I better start by figuring out who we have, so I know where to dig the new bedrooms.

This group is led by the remaining members of Clan J, who had been in control of Salveluck, where most of the Clan has been wiped out by the ceaseless goblin attacks.  Clan J is closely linked to Clan I through multiple marriage ties, which is why the current head, Catten Slingcleaned, and his wife, Ustuth Hallprice, Sigun’s other daughter, apparently decided to seek refuge here.  I suppose, given his previous position, it is understandable that Catten is a skilled administrator, though I’m not entirely sure what he can do here.  Ustuth is a bowyer, and will probably be seconded to carpentry, as our other Catten, Fencedlearned, has been.

They were accompanied by Slingcleaned’s nephew, Aban Swordtip, and his wife, Kikrost Rocksjump.  Aban is a farmer, so he’ll be easy to find work for, while Kikrost is a fisherdwarf.  Then there’s also Sodel’s uncle, Stukos Blushoars and his wife Dodók Wetearthen, both of whom are also fisherdwarves.  Oddly enough, Bomrek seems to have stopped requesting fish.  Probably because we now have plenty.  Still, the three of them will probably prove useful.

Their companions also include Urist Bronzecities, one of Salveluck’s junior scholars, and his wife Momuz Swordfigures, one of Sigun’s surviving sisters who is also a trainer.  We can easily spare Urist to join Dr. Urist and Rimtar in the library.  Maybe working together they’ll be able to find a solution to the Bomrek problem?  Or to make Dodók suddenly see reason.  I can always hope.

Adil Bustbanded is a siege engineer, who claims that it was only her defenses that held off the goblins for as long as they did.  She insists that we can use some of those same defenses, even though there hasn’t been so much as a rumor of a hostile goblin since our arrival.  Well, it’ll give her something to do, at least.

Dodók’s fourth son, Edzul Razorblown, and his wife Urvad Bodicebalanced finish out the rag-tag group.  Edzul is an experienced siege operator, while Urvad is another marskdwarf.  I can’t decide if Edzul is a spy sent to report back to his father, or if he is honestly seeking the one place in Orom Nalish where there are guaranteed to be no goblin attacks.  Or, possibly, both, given that he is joining two of his sisters, Ral and Minkot.

09 Sandstone 89

Thanks to the Salveluck refugees, our import numbers are staying high.  So I was forced to trade the entire quota for one brass bar to make another bucket.

All that work, and we get one measly little bucket out of it.  Does the king have any concept of “unfair”?

Before trade:                                      After trade:

11 Sandstone 89

Well, it’s about time.  The third breeding finally took.

12 Sandstone 89

Akrul has put together guidelines to deal with everything except the metal stuff.

It looks like the glassmaker Mebzuth, the bone carver Rith, and our carpenters Lyra & Uvash are going to be complaining about the workload again.  And that doesn’t even consider Sodel, who has to make all of the clothing.  Maybe this will change his tune regarding his refusal to allow Lulo to do any tailoring?

And Akrul only backed off on her metal orders when I pointed out how few weapons-grade bars we really have.  So, how am I going to fix this?  More toys?
--------------------

13 Sandstone 89

The news quickly spread through the city.  Oda had been elected mayor, thanks to her spending so much time in the tavern during her first two years.  Lotu could already see her reaction the next time Bomrek insisted on wood items in his quota.  He promptly called a meeting of Founders and local Clan leaders.

“An elf, any elf, is th’ wors’ possible choice!”  Imic said what they were all thinking.  “There’s gotta be someun better.”

“Like one of us?”  Catten suggested.  “I’ve had experience managing a city.  I’d be happy to do it.”

Imic shot him down.  “Bu’ down there ye didn’ have t’deal with someone like Bomrek, stealin’ everything we make.”

Dr. Urist nodded.  “We need someone local, who’s familiar with the situation.”

“Since we need a mayor who can handle the king’s demands, why don’t we select one of the original Clan Founders?  King Dodók has to at least listen to one of them, given that their lineages are just as old and revered as his.”

Lyra’s proposal narrowed the options down to Rigóth Dikepage of Clan C, Vucar Labordrinker of Clan H, and Kivish Bentglazes of Clan K.

Rigóth immediately spoke up.  “With my military duties, it will be impossible to juggle the mayoral ones as well.  Count me out.”

Kivish and Vucar looked at each other.  Neither one particularly wanted the job, but Lyra did have a valid point.  Kivish finally shrugged.  “My Clan is dying out.  Vucar’s Clan is growing, perhaps she would be a better choice.”

Vucar opened her mouth, but Lotu jumped in to forestall her.  “All in favor?”

A chorus of “ayes” rose around the room.

“Done.  I’m no longer expedition leader, and Vucar is now in charge.”  Thank Armok!

Vucar looked around, then leaned forward, raising one forefinger.  “As long as it is understood that I will only be taking on meetings and official correspondence with Theaterknowledge and Swordgangs.  I came here because I didn’t want to manage an entire city.  Lotu can keep that part of the job!”

“Bu—“  Lotu’s objection was drowned out by the others’ agreement.

He slumped back in his chair, head between his hands.  I’m tired of deciding everything.  I just want to mine, and spend time with my wife.

As if she heard his thoughts, Airith’s muscular arm slipped around his shoulders, and she squeezed tenderly.  “Cheer up, love.  At least you won’t have to stop mining every time some human asks to stay.”

That’s true.  Lotu perked up a little.

“Now, I wanted to run something by you…”
--------------------

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

14 Sandstone 89

The king wants Akrul managing the quota for Finderboards, so she’ll keep doing that.  And after some thinking, I’ve decided to put Catten Slingcleaned in charge of temples.  Even without the residents, the Catten's refugees have brought us to more than a hundred citizens, so we’re a big enough city to support at least a few dedicated temples.  Catten will be in charge of designing and maintaining them, which should put his administrative experience to good use.

He asked me which one to start on, and I told him that was part of his job.  He suggested that we might want to consider giving the elves a suitable shrine, since Oda was so expeditiously removed from the mayorship.  I told him to bring me a design and I’d consider it, if it wasn’t too much work.

16 Sandstone 89

Catten met with our eight resident elves, to discuss what kind of shrine they would like.  The first set of designs had a separate shrine for each Force.  I took one look at the five sheets of paper containing variations on glades, pools and rivers, and put my foot down.  I instructed him to inform the elves to find a compromise for a single shrine.  I refuse to bog Airith down with the engineering necessary to put waterways and waterfalls everywhere, not to mention my having to dig them out when the magma supply rails are under construction.

17 Sandstone 89

The new Force shrine design is much more manageable.  I’ll channel out the pool tomorrow, and have Akrul put in the necessary orders for petrified wood statues and green glass altars.  I almost suggested wooden statues and clear glass altars, but remembered at the last minute that elves are peculiar about things like that.  The petrified wood and green glass instead seems to have satisfied them.

At the same time, Catten has submitted an initial design for the Temple to Robek.  This one is rather more intricate, requiring obsidian casting, among other things.

But it got me thinking.  Disregarding the were-creatures cursed by other deities, we haven’t been bothered by any of Robek’s servants.  Still, a proper temple and regular ceremonies will go a long way to keeping Robek happy.  I really don’t want to find out if the ancient legends are true, about what happens if he ever loses his cool.  Though they might just be children’s tales.  Still, no settlement with an appropriate temple has ever earned his ire, so better safe than sorry.

We’ll do this one right, as dwarves have always done.  Just in case.

19 Sandstone 89

Before they left, Vutok met with Echoworked.  Somehow she was able to convince that stiff-necked, by-the-book dwarf to count three metal bars as a single traded “item.”  It won’t help us this year, but next year…  Well, maybe we’ll be closer to under the cap by then.

23 Sandstone 89

She’s requested three doors.  Well, at least it’s useful, and they’re all going to stay here, unlike some of Bomrek’s requirements.

27 Sandstone 89

Edzul and Akrul have married.  I suppose it makes sense, neither one has another prospect, and Edzul really wants a family.  Still, Akrul?

Though maybe this will distract her a bit?  We could use a break from her silent entrances into various workshops.  It’s like she wants some of us to die of surprise.

28 Sandstone 89

Or…maybe not.  Akrul is spending her honeymoon inspecting stockpiles.

03 Timber 89

And…marriage has made Akrul even more unliveable than before.  Only her husband Edzul seems exempt.  She’s grabbed Edzul Razorblown and sent him to make bone crafts and put the three new fisherdwarves to work making wooden toys, with threats of dire punishment if they don’t make enough mini-forges.  Aban has been assigned to help Mestthos melt down any imported metal to try and get enough bars to make the maces.

Everyone else is grumbling because she wants several stockpiles changed around, in the name of efficiency.  We’re all going to have to learn some new hauling routes.
--------------------

08 Timber 89

Akrul stalked across the tavern toward Lotu.  Slapping her hands on the table in front of him, she leaned forward.

“I need an office.”

“You have one.”  Lotu refused to be intimidated, leaning back in his chair and munching his giant mole meat roast.

“A chair!  I need an actual table to write on.  And shelves to store old records on.  And a place to store paper and ink.  And a door I can close when I need to focus.  In short, I need a real office!”

Lotu took another bite, and chewed slowly.  Finally swallowing, he said, “It’s on the to-do list.”

“It’s been on the ‘to-do list’ for years!  If you have time to dig out massive temples, you can dig out a 3x3 space for me!”

Vucar probably needs an office too, before she has to take another meeting with Echoworked.  Hmmm.

He nodded to Akrul.  “You’ll have your office before Robek’s Temple is complete.”

She started to say something else, then visibly restrained herself.  “It had better be.”  She turned away with a huff.
--------------------

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

15 Timber 89

Vucar, true to her reluctant bargain, is passing along all the requests she possibly can, and they’re landing on my desk in a steadily growing river of paper.  The latest is Adil, who is insisting that our defenses need upgrading.  She has assured me that after Salveluck’s fall, she has learned some valuable lessons for anti-goblin constructions.  I tried to point out that the only goblins around here are peaceful ones, but she insists that all goblins are spies, better kept prisoner lest they inform their brethren of weaknesses in their targets

I finally told her that, if she felt that strongly about it, she could build herself a siege workshop and deal with the problem.

We now have a siege workshop against the eastern wall.

I haven’t seen her since.

23 Timber 89

We’ve finally started the initial digging phase on Robek’s Temple.  First step, we’ll need to dig out the magma and water pipes, though they won’t be connected until the very end.  We’ll need to dig out water pipes all the way up to the aquifer, but the magma will be easy.

OOC:The marker designation is the bottom level of the obsidian farm, which will ultimately be connected to the nearby magma pipe once a bauxite floodgate has been installed and hooked up.  The topmost level of the Temple of Robek (official name TBD) is visible to the west (standard designation), and some of the dug-out workshop plumbing is visible to the north.  The northernmost plumbing isn’t completely dug out yet, but there is a kiln and a glass furnace already installed above the eastern magma pool, and a forge and smelter are waiting for construction above the western one.

OOC: This is the middle level of what will become the obsidian farm, complete with access from the magma workshops.  Eventually there will also be some obsidian-dedicated workshops installed nearby.  The current marked channel will allow water from the level above to be fed into the temple to the west to cast it into obsidian.

OOC: This level will feed in water (from the aquifer, as the only infinite water source on the map, controlled by a raising drawbridge and at least one floodgate) from the west, dropping it through the channels and back west into the temple.  The topmost level of the temple will have channels cut in the roof where necessary to cast the final obsidian level.  Once the temple’s obsidian is finished, the western outflow channel on the bottom level will be closed off and the water level will receive a retracting bridge to turn it into a measuring farm (see the wiki for more info).

27 Timber 89

We’ve started installing green glass altars in the elven shrines.  Proper statues will take a little longer.

28 Timber 89

Akrul actually went to bother Vucar first.  It seems that she didn’t get the memo of how we’re going to make things work, and by the time she stalked into my office, she was fuming.

I hate this day.

£ Engraving just the floor of workshops? Something I haven't considered myself before.

I like it.

£ Hm. Helmsmatch, Trampledaxes and Tailclaps more and Theaterknowledge will be under attack.

£ Well, I suppose it's been years since Bomrek last requested maces. Why maces, and not hammers?

Eh. Good luck with that. Could get some from visitors, I suppose.

And. Not just maces and anvils. 256 windows too. (Hey, a round number!)
And you need to order 256 orders to gather sand, too.

And to add failure on to failure, Echoworked's compliments ring hollow to -128 units of cheese.

£ So poor even the bandits won't ambush you...That's...Meat for the giant wolves.

£ The family trees are pretty interesting and tangled. I wonder, do you have any graph for sketching them out?

Though ultimately, there's no good compact way to display a graph of triple-digit number of dwarves.

£ Brass bar? Surprising pick. But I suppose Akrul can't demand it made into an anvil.

£ Okay, you do realize how supplanting the will of people and putting the oldest noble family in charge will look?

I must admit, I didn't expect French undertones from this. Akrul certainly isn't happy, it seems.

And...oh yeah. Hope no guests arrived while the elf was the mayor.

...What goods did she like, anyway?

£ Prayers for death god. To be honest, I didn't realize you had gone this long without a temple; since that is the standard feature of breaks for me.

But obsidian-casting them? That, truly, is a project.

As for the elven-shrine, going by the orthogonal 3x1s I guess you'll limit water level to 3/7?

£ So you're finally doing the complex routes you planned out. Hope they'll help.

£ To be honest, never brothered seriously utilizing siege engineering. It makes for a neat way to cut trees for me, and that's it.

Why maces, and not hammers?

*shrugs*  I guess the DF AI prefers maces, even though hammers (IMO) work much better.

And you need to order 256 orders to gather sand, too.

I have "collect sand" on repeat in my non-work order glassworks, and Sodel makes one bag per cycle, which handily replaces the ones stolen for seeds.

I wonder, do you have any graph for sketching them out?

Though ultimately, there's no good compact way to display a graph of triple-digit number of dwarves.

I actually have a separate, color-coded Excel spreadsheet for each Clan.  I can post screencaps, but Clans A, B, & C are too big to fit into one screen (B & C take up four "pages" worth, while A takes two).

I must admit, I didn't expect French undertones from this.

How do you mean?  And for the rest, Oda only has four friends, all of whom are petitioners, but is a Master Persuader, Master Intimidator, Master Conversationalist, and Master Pacifier (among other skills of no interest).  I figured there was probably some funny, under-handed business going on.  And no, no guests arrived in the interim.

...What goods did she like, anyway?

Oda or Vucar?  Oda likes: orpiment, fine pewter (which I can't make because this map doesn't have any cassiterite), jasper opal, and battle axes.
Vucar likes: graphite, electrum (plenty of local gold & silver ore, so this is no problem), white chalcedony, war hammers, and doors.

£ Prayers for death god. To be honest, I didn't realize you had gone this long without a temple; since that is the standard feature of breaks for me.

I have a non-denominational temple zone (just bare dirt floor and a bare dirt wall), which means that praying/meditating takes rather longer than it would in dedicated temples.  And even if that weren't a factor, a city should have some dedicated temples.

As for the elven-shrine, going by the orthogonal 3x1s I guess you'll limit water level to 3/7?

Some 3/7 tiles, some 4/7, to get some swim training on anyone who dares to worship an elvish Force.

Vucar likes: graphite, electrum (plenty of local gold & silver ore, so this is no problem), white chalcedony, war hammers, and doors.
Meant Oda, but nice to know both. I guess Vucar's easier to fulfill for you, with the lack of metal bars, tough I'd usually like a singular preference

And yeah, cassiterite is indeed pretty restricted, though that is at least partly my fancying of surface.

I have a non-denominational temple zone (just bare dirt floor and a bare dirt wall), which means that praying/meditating takes rather longer than it would in dedicated temples.  And even if that weren't a factor, a city should have some dedicated temples.
Oho! Never heard of this benefit, though.

Might try to experiment later. Shouldn't be too hard to check; just lock someone with red need in room, save beforehand, and then run few trials.

Not sure this is a good idea. Varying pathable squares might have same effect as furniture on repeater; and I recall in childcare thread partially 4/7 box eventually becoming wholly unpathable.

It's based on anecdotal evidence from the boards, but I haven't actually confirmed/debunked it.

Interesting.  I'll need to do some tests and see what happens.

Early Winter, 89 - Swordgangs

Meng ticked off the final item, and studied the list.  For once they've filled every last one.  Bomrek will be pleased.

And indeed, he was.  "The king must have really lit a fire under their lazy arses!"  He chuckled.  "They've finally gotten to work."

"And there is one other thing."  Meng paused, making sure he had Bomrek's attention.  "Lotu's been removed as expedition leader.  Finderboards had an election just before the caravan left, and the merchants are regaling tavern-goers with the story of the scandal that broke out.  During her years in the tavern, one of the elves had gotten to know enough others to get her elected, but then the local Clan leaders found out the results.  They promptly ousted her and installed Vucar, who Founded Clan H.  Talk about flying in the face of dwarven tradition."

Bomrek was silent for a moment, then snorted,  "An elf!  There's a reason I kick all petitioners out as soon as they enter my office.  We don't need any tree-loving fanatics here.  And they put a doddering old woman in charge?  Hmmph.  She'll be easy to intimidate.  Pity, though, that they removed the elf.  That would have gotten His Majesty suitably upset."

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

02 Moonstone 89

Vucar has spent the last month and a half conducting an investigation into how Oda got elected, given her dearth of friends.  Several other dwarves, mostly late-comers, have come forward with stories of veiled threats and implied promises, but some of the events date back to Oda’s days as a performer in the tavern, before she was assigned to the fields.  Unfortunately, when Imic (as the militia captain), Vucar (in her capacity as mayor) and I (as de facto city leader) met to discuss the evidence, there was nothing concrete.  Still, we all agreed that she needed to be punished in some way.

Imic was all in favor of giving her a good beating, while Vucar wanted her thrown in a jail cell.  However, we don’t have a jail.  Vucar immediately demanded that I dig one out for cases like these, but in the meantime, I think we came up with a suitably creative punishment.

Oda has been assigned to hauling logs for the rest of the month.  One day for each citizen reporting either a threat or a bribe.  She’d better get the message.

05 Moonstone 89

We seem to have the workload under control, so I’ve sent the new rangers, Urvad and Momuz, to Mooney for marksdwarf assignments.

09 Moonstone 89

Lyra has finished off the spear quota with a masterfully-worked spear.  Take that, Bomrek!

13 Moonstone 89

He must have been inspired by his recent travels.  He’s claimed a crafter’s workshop, so we have another useless gorgeous craft to look forward to.

17 Moonstone 89

At Adil’s instigation, we’ve incorporated emplacements for ballistae into the eastern wall, while she designs the components.

It looks like we’ll have a handy tree-felling system, since Imic’s dwarves can handle any standard attacks.

21 Moonstone 89

Whatever it is, it’ll be nicely decorated.

24 Moonstone 89

With all of the rock we now have handy, I’ve added him to the mason’s guild.  Another has started him on rock blocks, while he and Vucar focus on making some more furniture.

26 Moonstone 89

Yep, a useless craft.  And given its small size, it’s decorated to within a hair of its life.  If it were just a bit bigger, it would almost qualify as its very own weapon.

27 Moonstone 89

The eastern ramparts are now complete.

Mooney wants a proper archery range to train his marksdwarf recruits, preferably a different one for each squad, so that they don’t get in each other’s way.  Studying the plans, it looks like the two corner towers would be a good place to put them.

--------------------

02 Opal 89

Oda carefully inserted the seed into the fertile ground, and fumed.  I was so close!  I was actually elected!  I could have started teaching these poor dwarves a better way.  They would have learned the benefits of valuing living creatures, rather than killing them for simply being in the way.

But no.  They had to remove me, and put a dwarf in charge.  And as if that weren’t enough, I had to haul CORPSES for a month!

Nearby, Udil jerked at Oda’s sudden almost-growl.  “Are you okay?”

Oda waved her off with a grunt, returning to her unhappy thoughts.  It’s not like I was going to hurt anyone.  But every elf knows that dwarves only respond to violence and greed.  How else was I supposed to gain the necessary power?  Maybe with Tise’s blessing, I’ll be able to find another way.  As soon as this field is done, I’m going to spend some time meditating.
--------------------

05 Opal 89

Akrul has rearranged the stockpiles.  Bolts are now stored up on the completed ramparts, while stone stockpiles have been designated in various parts of the mines.  The masonries are also to be moved, to be closer to their dedicated stockpiles.  Then there are the minecart stockpiles, which will take clay and sand from the surface down to the magma workshops.  And, as if that weren’t enough, she’s turned the food storage completely topsy-turvy.  Why do the elves need dedicated seed stockpiles, anyway?  It’ll take us weeks to sort it all out!

07 Opal 89

With so many dwarves now having duplicate names, we’ve settled on a naming system, of sorts, using the Clan affiliation.  Just so that we know who is being addressed or discussed at any given time.

So for example, Akrul’s husband Edzul is now referred to as Edzul G, while Edzul Razorblown is Edzul A.  It isn’t perfect, but it seems to work.  Of course, that assumes no one decides to start using a nickname, as some of us have done.
--------------------

11 Opal 89

Vucar examined the three doors carefully.  Only one of them, made of olivine, was of masterwork quality, but that was all she needed.  “Install it in my bedroom.  A mayor should have some privacy.”

--------------------

Excerpts from the journal of Lotu Sizzlediron, expedition leader.

18 Opal 89

Mayor Vucar and Another have been churning out furniture, so we’re starting to furnish our bedrooms with microcline cabinets and chests, and replacing the rickety wooden tavern tables and chairs with lovely orthoclase ones.

To keep Akrul from changing things up again out of peevishness, I had her furniture moved in right after mine, the other Founders’, Vucar’s, and the remaining Clan leaders.  I figure that should establish the proper order of precedence.

01 Obsidian 89

Catten J is taking his new job of Temple Designer and Manager seriously.

13 Obsidian 89

Ingish misread my plans!  Instead of starting with the magma and water pipes, he started by digging out the temple itself.  I guess I can’t blame him.  Several dwarves are starting to get antsy with the lack of proper temples.  In the meantime, Another has produced a masterfully worked bauxite floodgate that we can use to control the magma flow, and another rock one that will control the water.  In addition, there are plenty of mechanisms lying around, so hooking things up won’t be a problem.

15 Obsidian 89

Actually, digging out the future temple first might not be a bad thing.  It’s given me time to rework the obsidian water pipes to include refilling systems for our cavern lakes, just in case.  We’re going to need some more floodgates.  And pressure plates.

18 Obsidian 89

Catten J has submitted some more temple ideas.  He has suggested a spiral design for the Book of Insight, and the placement of a shrine to the human deity Acath in the library, since the humans believe he aids scholarship and writing.

If we take his recommendation, the Book of Insight’s temple would look like this:

Catten says that the spiral shape symbolizes the journey from ignorance to wisdom.  He wants to put it in the granite layers surrounding the top cavern because of the high quartz content, which supposedly helps to clarify and center one’s thoughts.  He also wants the central room to be a dome, two or three levels high, depending on the surrounding rock.  It might work.  OOC: Any thoughts?  I’m not going to start on this one until the end of spring, at the earliest, and possibly not until some time in the summer, so there’s time for dissent and tweaking.  Or to replace the design entirely if someone else comes up with a better/more appropriate one.

26 Obsidian 89

Sigun has successfully tamed our first female draltha.  Now to we just need to obtain a male.

28 Obsidian 89

The sooner we get that sandbag railway into commission, the better.  We simply cannot keep up with Mebzuth’s voracious appetite for sand.  Akrul has insisted that he go back to using the surface glassworks for the moment.  I had to agree, since we need to shorten his supply line as much as possible.  I’ve also instructed Zasit and Medtob to start assisting Mebzuth.  Despite his legendary speed and skill, he clearly needs help this year.  I've also ordered some more temporary glassworks set up, so that we can gather sand more quickly.

There is a simpler way to see who is male and who is female at a glance: All unmarried males end their names in "o", and all married males end their names with some consonant.  All unmarried females end their names in "i" and all married females end their names in "a".  Therefore an unmarried male dwarf named "Edzul" for example, would change their name to "Edzulo", but once he became married, he'd lose the "o" and just become "Edzul".  If Olin were an unmarried female, her name would be "Olini" and once married, would change her name to "Olina".  Of course, this becomes more difficult for people with nicknames, like young "Bob", but perhaps adding the nickname after the "proper name" may solve that problem.  "Led Bob" may then become "Ledo -Bob-", whereas his father would still be "Kogsak -Imic-" and his mother would become "Ushrira -NCommander-".  One unfortunate side effect of this system is that males with a name ending in a vowel, like "Lotu" would be Lotuo" if unmarried and "Lot" if married, losing their end vowel.

Of course, you can choose whichever addition seems appropriate to gender-match a name, so long as the same process is applied across the board.  In this manner, newborns and migrants can be quickly and efficiently named to determine at a glance which gender they happen to be.

If there was a different naming process for each civilization, then that could differentiate their cultures distinctly as well, making Legends mode much more interesting.

I have a system in place that gives me: race, sex, age, Clan affiliation (both born to and married into for females) and marital status for every resident/citizen.  Do you want some iteration of that information included in the current character lists?

o Huh. You had Bomrek accept the iron bars?

Or maybe he didn't notice...Either way, that's going to make next year bite all the harder.

o Oh yeah, jail cells...That reminds me of this script to restrain creatures/citizens you have. Might be useful for your story purposes.

Hm, what does Oda's profile look like, now that they've been replaced?

o Hm. I suppose a single ballista can quickly clean up a path for caravans, even if not much use otherwise.

o Distributed production? Careful to not make it inefficient, there. Confirm that masons are taking from nearby after all and such.

Though at least you have plenty of haulers now to move things around.

o For the book of insight, you could "invisibly" shorten the path by building bridges and then d-b-hiding them.

It's also a great trick to make it look like dwarves are walking on magma.

(Though then I scrolled down and understood the .s are floors, not empty spaces.)

For the floor coverings, might also use roads or bridges to give passing dwarves happy thoughts, though mind the dance area.

Finally, for what springs to mind to me on something scholarship and wisdom related...First, I guess an armor stand, perhaps with book on stand? Second, I guess a lever, or perhaps fluid or minecart logic cell.

Lot of wise actions one can commit in a fortress, but there's the association with fortresses. Ultimately, what underlies them all is willingness to read and test. (Yet, glass vials are rater unusued items.)

o Well, I guess it is pretty clear which ones are failing. Mace, Windows, cheese. Luck!

Interesting, I'll keep that in mind.

Hm, what does Oda's profile look like, now that they've been replaced?

She doesn't seem to realize she's been replaced, but "she feels contemptuous after getting into an argument."  So I'm going with that.

o Distributed production? Careful to not make it inefficient, there. Confirm that masons are taking from nearby after all and such.

Always.  I use stockpile links for this (being very careful with where the bins end up).

Lot of wise actions one can commit in a fortress, but there's the association with fortresses. Ultimately, what underlies them all is willingness to read and test. (Yet, glass vials are rater unusued items.)

Which is why Urdim the Barricade of Fortresses will actually be the most difficult.  So many choices...  The reading/testing is why I wanted to put a shrine to the relevant human deity in the library.  I can always move it to a temple later if the need arises.

Unfortunately, there was no time to play this week, so no update today.  I'll be able to play some this weekend, and will try to get an update up at the beginning of the week.
