FPS is plodding a bit (played an hour and a half this afternoon and didn't even make it out of Limestone). Updates will be particularly sluggish from here on out.

Would DFhack-cleaning the layers of PURE FUCKING PROTEIN on the ground help?

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

Maybe. The main problem is probably the three cavern layers plus a jungle's worth of trees multiplied by a 4x4 starting area (my computer chokes on 2x2 with 1 layer sometimes, lol). It's hovering around 20FPS at the moment.

E: I'm starting to wonder if the trees causing massive lag is due to a bug or something, since they're honestly pretty inanimate. I don't really understand why they'd need so much muscle to process.

It isn't the trees themselves, but the item-spatter their leaves and fruits cause. Plus the protein coating and it dumping the stuff every few days with no way to turn it off.

I don't think it's the item spatter. I mod my trees to not drop anything and they still cause insane lag (IIRC I did a 2x2 embark on a glacier and got 400FPS to start with; similar embark on a jungle in the same world started at 90FPS).

I will never understand why some people get good FPS and others get garbage FPS. Its possible we have a FB or 30 lurking in the caverns though. Trapped building destroyers can cause lag city.

For the record, do you know this for a fact or are we playing the good old "I THINK THIS IS THE ANSWER"/"WELL I THINK THIS IS THE ANSWER" game? I'm not sure what sort of discussion we're having.

My laptop being a turd is the primary reason, lol. Even VNs make it run so hot I legitimately worry it'll cook itself (although in all seriousness that probably indicates more that there's a problem with the cooling system thingies).

With regard to heating, laptops are atrocious for that. They're crammed in a tiny space with a gutless fan that struggles to cool things, especially given it's on the bottom of the laptop, and the work they do demands better cooling. My old laptop would regularly hit 70-80C after an hour or so of gaming, and liked to shut itself down in the summer due to CPU overheat, even while doing basic things.

Meanwhile, my big ol' desktop I built last September is sitting at about 35-40C depending on component. (SSD: 30C, HDD 24C, GPU: 50C, Mobo: 33C, CPU: 33C) in ambient temperatures of about 21C.

In all seriousness, some of the more expensive desktop setups use liquid cooling. It's about as effective as you'd expect, though iirc CPUs function best at just slightly above 30C.

And yeah Froggy, I did research way back when my laptop first started overheating; 45C summers means you have to treat electronics carefully lest they overheat. I still recall my brother insisting on playing our PS3 one day it was 44C; the PS3's fans could be heard spinning from the other side of the house.

The question that now must be asked is if and when someone will come out with a liquid cooled laptop.

It's a pity you can't use a mug as a heatsink.
