suddenly, yeti
« on: June 25, 2016, 03:45:41 pm »

Embarked to a glacier, with native yeti.  I was busy digging the dining room, when a yeti comes barging in being like WHERE'S THE DINING ROOM.  he toppled everything on his way down, and i recruited everyone into a squad to pick it to death.

However, for the life of me, i can't get them to equip the picks.  They just wrestle it.  They wrestled with an unconscious yeti for 7 days before i gave up and reloaded.  So now the yeti is barreling down on me, and i got like 1 day to get the miners to wield their picks in combat.  how do i do it?

In the uniform page, picks are a selection but listed as foreign.  The squad doesn't seem to want to equip them that way.  I also tried 'melee weapon of choice' and that didn't work either.  What's the trick?  Do they need a barracks to equip within?

Hi!

1) Make them all miners (miners will automatically equip a pick).
2) Don't put them in a squad (there's a bug where they'll drop the "civilian" picks immediately and try to find another "military" weapon, I don't know if that's been fixed).
3) Designate something to be mined near where the yeti is (or will be).
4) The civilian miners will use mining skill to fight the yeti (and they'll gain mining skill).

Alternatively, if you don't want to mine/want them to also wear armor/want them to kill yeti, not disengage when it is unconscious:

1) Make a pick uniform and put all your miners into a squad with it.
2) Disable their mining labour

Miners will now drop picks that belonged to their mining uniform and then in a short while (~10 steps) equip picks that belong to their military uniform.

What you describe is the expected behaviour if you don't do step 2 - inactive military soil miners will carry their picks, an when activated they'll drop picks and then look for their uniforms - which can't include the pick they just dropped.

There is no way to have a dwarf mine a wall while wearing armor.

BAM DEAD YETI

Yup, its the mining skill.

Trivial Finding:  When recruited, the dwarves with mining enabled drop their picks, but still retain ownership of them.  As military recruits they will then look for picks to pick up (becuase that's what their uniform tells them to use) but will fail to find unowned picks, because they own the picks.  They won't use their own picks.  Miners will mine enemies with their picks, gaining mining experience, but recruits wielding picks will get weapon experience instead.

This is why I never recruit my miners.

What do you mean "weapon experience"? The weapon experience for pickaxe based fighting is the mining skill.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

Can't you just disable the mining skill on your recruits?

Would dfhack-cleanowned scattered help to make the dropped picks available for military use again?

Probably, but it's far easier to just disable mining on the miners. That will cause them to drop their picks and the picks will be unowned. Militia dorfs can then pick those picks up.

Zazq said above that ownership will be retained...that would make the picks uneligble, or wouldn't it?

No, Zazq said MINERS will drop their mining picks when drafted and retain the ownership of their mining tools. If dorfs drop picks because they're no longer miners they don't retain the pick ownership either. A subtle but important difference.

I have done a test embark to play around with this bug (watching the time delay to realize things changed for dwarves was interesting), and no it doesn't, assuming at least single step has passed since you disabled mining.

If you're confused about the mechanics of this, I do recommend doing one yourself.
