More Siege Engines/Better Siege Engines
« on: June 22, 2016, 11:49:58 am »

To start off on why I created this thread. I want you to think of this. Imagine a aboveground castle manned by 5-6 ballistas that are always ready to fire. A invasion of goblins arrives and your ballistas prepare to fire when you realize. Ballistas don't fire down z levels. Your army looks like fools while the goblins hunt down your siege operators. Then I have another thought. Why not have other siege engines. When a invasion occurs why can't our goblin enemies use rams to bring down doors instead, then you have siege towers to reach those who lived to high in the mountains. Just the thought about having better siege engines allows so much more crazy designs that may work or cause much more "fun". Last of all. I want my ballistas to fire downwards!

I want that ballista to fire down and kill my enemies!
PS: Think about having a siege engine that uses fire/magma and spews it through fortifications or just straight at enemies! it would be like ancient Greek Fire! Then you also could have a restraint shooting siege engine. :D totally balanced

This. My first "good" fort was taken out because I didn't realize this. 200% still mad about it. As the giant arrows flew over the gabbos heads, I swear they were laughing at me.

Hi!

That's what catapults are supposed to do, but even they don't work right.

Second this.  Not to mention, arbalests are just cool, and should be allowed to achieve the full range of their potential.

Other siege engines that fit the timeline (from a quick search that started here): battering rams, siege towers, assault ladders (LotR, anyone?), and flamethrowers (the ancient Greeks were very innovative, apparently).  Interestingly enought, there weren't any really new siege engines during the Roman Empire, and Dark Ages, until the introduction of the cannon (which Toady has expressed reservations about due to gunpowder).  Everything in the first ~1500 years AD were simply modifications and context-specific changes to the basic siege engines.

Don't worry people, sometimes -moments occur

There is one thing those civilizations didn't have, and that was dwarf ingenuity and the ability to create "fun" out of nothing. Still siege engines in our case can be anything from a simple arbalest to a dwarf firing machine gun. To make said weapon you need a "clip" of 30 dwarves that are too dumb to understand whats happening or are brave enough. Next you need some enemies. Last of all equip your dwarves with axes. Then fire them off like cannons!  Dwarves ingenuity 8)
