Something New
« on: June 21, 2016, 11:11:05 am »

In one of my fortresses, one of my Glassmakers was in a fey mood and crafted a green glass bed artifact. I thought beds could only be made from wood. I think this could either be a bug, or this is something new. I guess I can use that artifact when I get a king or queen to give them a royal bedroom.

Strange moods can allow Dwarves to produce items out of materials that they otherwise logically, physically or mentally should not be capable of envisaging and producing. Nevertheless, they produce them anyways. In this case this is very much a feature, strange moods make Dwarves capable of creating glass beds studded with spikes comfy.

Interesting... I wonder what impossible object my next strange mood dwarf will produce next!

Jeweler moods are the best for this. I once had a jeweler cut an entire bed from a single rough sunstone.

I've gotten two separate pieces of bone armor (greaves and left gauntlet) so far in a fortress that's had only three strange moods. Hopefully if I wait a few more years, I'll be able to adorn a warrior in full bone armor.

As nice as it sounds, bone armor is largely useless, especially with the newest version. Bones break really easy. (In theory. I haven't tested the durability of "artifact" armor yet.)

Yeah but imagine how badass your Monarch/Hammerer/Captain of the Guard would look wearing the bones of a hundred defeated enemies.

Or, more likely, the bones of 2 defeated cats, a yak, and Urist McGrisleydeath

Yeah, Im split about armor and weapons being broken in fights. Its realistic but is it fun?

I'm fairly happy about it because it means making a viable set of armor and weapons requires ongoing forging, and gives reason to keep your armorsmith constantly crafting and keeping the rejects. Not "do it once and forget".

Fucking hell man, you aren't just getting the short end of the stick, you're being beaten with it.

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )

Agree with NCommander. Now a robust metalwork industry is more important than ever, and you have actual reasons to produce armor of all kinds instead of the most valuable one for trading. Also in adventure mode you now have a reason to bring a spare weapon with you, specially a light dagger that doesnt weight you down.

Why not lot of light daggers, then?

And then dwarves were ninjas.

On original topic of artifacts, bone moods seem even more versatile/random, even if their armor is useless outside of shields it can still produce anything a mason, carpenter or rock grafter can. Artifact furniture is pretty nice.

Of course, once that is done they'll be left chunking out bone bolts and civvie "clothes".

Though, I can't help but wonder why wasn't artifact bonus done as additive instead of multiplier, to enable bone armor/spears be competitive with non-artifact bronze gear, at least.

I believe the gauntlet is made from giant bat bone, and the greaves are from yak bone.

One of my bone carvers went to a strange mood and made a bone leggings artifact. Since bone armors are kind of weak, this may be one of those "just for show" artifacts.

Are artifact items really degraded in fights though? I mean artifacts usually ignore degradation from things such as fire (indeed burn forever) and similar things.
