Wear is stored in two fields, one with the wear level 1, 2, 3 and another with the wear counter which ticks up and then increments the level.

In real life you can damage armor just by taking a fall that lands wrong. I haven't done any proper science on determining quantitatively how quickly wear occurs, but from what I have seen steel is very resistant to damage and wear.

Undead Ravens are actually a pretty serious foe. They generally come in large numbers and thus get in a great many attacks. They are also quite resilient and strong compared to their living counterparts so the fight tends to drag on resulting in the exchange of countless blows.

Note that I was lopping heads off rapidly. They only got maybe three or four hits in, and of those I had 2 pieces of armor get damage by it. Again, material that should've had vastly higher shear values than the offending beaks and talons.

I object to this. I've had zombie ravens, mundane fucking ravens, peck and scratch my buffed bone armor to the point of damaging it.

For reference, that's 115000/130000 shear values for mundane bone (think beaks use that), versus 240000/240000 for the beefed-up bone shear values. Unless having buffed nails to a MAX_EDGE of 4000 affected it, I fully suspect this could use a nerf.

The big problem there is the beaks not getting broken, not the armor getting broken. Again, it ought to be based on actual pressure done by attacks, not some arbitrary gamey damage bull.

All in all, you probably should in the future make bone armour solely out of undead raven/jabberer beaks.

I don't recollect ever seeing a beak/bones fracture in combat logs between getting chipped (on experiments with trolls).

But the raven bits are way shittier than my modded materials. It'd be even WORSE. Scvrew that "beaks falling apart" idea, they shouldn't find it so easy to peck through the armor like that in only a couple hits, to begin with.

And I'm bloody well not buffing these materials further, already skewed the balance beyond what I intended just to make the megabeast-tier materials stop falling apart like tissue paper.

Have you tested the undead ravens vs steel and candy? Toady made a comment in the development logs about how he tweaked the stronger materials to take less wear from softer ones. It may very well mean he has tweaked this internally with some sort of hard coding and your modded materials aren't being effected by those tweaks?

That would irritate the fuck out of me if that's true. To actually confirm this, I'd need to get steel armor and mod mundane body materials to be a bit shy of steel's durability to the same extent as the differences in the materials I've already used.
