This could be annoying for people who enjoy really long term fort mode.  You only get so much candy and eventually you will have to downgrade back to steel and goblinite.

And then you're stuck using mussel shells, at which point you're one step away from just sending the army in naked.

A peasant broke my foot through my bronze high boots with a punch. There is some serious balancing to be done regarding indirect combat damage.

I actually love the tear and wear of armor. One of the cool things about DF is how many things in your fortress can appear on their own. Now you have a reason to produce a variety of armor regularly rather than just the most expensive one.

This entirely. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, the reasons above are basically why we don't make even a single piece of candy clothing most times (typically, anyways).

"Oh look, I didn't make more replacement armor, and I just noticed half my army is missing various pieces" as an added hassle, on top of the main issue, which is just the complete disappearing of the special metals stocks. Even, say, the world genned metals.

If wear and tear on those types of metals is essentially as bad as on, say, steel, that really takes the wind out my sails for a long term many-generation fort. Alas.

To be fair, the high grade metals aren't really supposed to be spammed for everybody. Even in real world armies of the time most people came with crappy wooden shields and spears that used a minimum of metal. Adamantium should be, at best, commander grade metal, while steel goes to the legendaries and regular iron or bronze goes to the underlings. The problem right now is that the only limiting factors on things are the ones WE impose. Once the economy gets installed and there's reasons that dwarves might not pick the best gear, things will start to level to where they should be.

As for replacement gear . . . if there was any thought and intention put into it, this is probably why we got Work Order upgrades installed before this stuff. That way you could use the Manager to automate the construction of replacement gear. Granted, knowing Toady's method of picking the small stuff as he goes, it's probable it's all coincidence.

I love it too, the problem is the indirect damage. It is way too powerful right now.

Not everybody wants to exploit loopholes in the game.

Candy probably should be reserved for the higher ups. When the economy hits you're not going to be seeing Peasant #273 getting his hands on adamantine short swords anyway. This new system just encourages you to think ahead and start following economic restrictions yourself.

military and economy can be a funny mix. currently weapons and armor are fortress property until they become named items. and whom gets what is more or less directly assigned.

if however each dwarf started purchasing weapons and armors there would be little need for the uniform system and i would expect my entire force to martialize in a siege type event

I can see this going hilariously wrong for pretty much every reason the economy was originally scrapped.

After mining the entire non-clown-car part of a candy cane, I had just about enough to fully equip ~5 dwarves. This involved obsidian casting a large area (and a little bit of DFHackery once I realized that obsidian won't form right above SMR.)

If adamantine wears down, then a spire might not even last a single dwarf their lifetime. Too Awesome to Use. I would probably limit it to only epic battles in adventure mode.

I like the wear and tear on armor, but I think there should be a way for smiths to repair worn armor using very little new material. The fact that the blows are now transmitted to joints is a nerf armor has needed for a long time. I will have to play with it a bit to see what I think of the balancing on it but armor should be pretty bad at preventing blunt trauma and torsion damage.
