It does this crusty ol' codger's heart good to see such a long standing and vexing problem finally addressed.

Alas we must wait for the next update, but it shouldn't be long.

With the nerf comes the buff.

With the nerf comes the buff.
The ability to break necks by hitting helmets hard enough. Sounds like a nice buff. Besides when did DF ever have 'balance'. ;)

The buff I meant was NPCs wear arm and leg protection. Narratively speaking, it's just huge.

But necks broken by war hammer shots to the helmet? That's good too.

Balance is boring, life isn't balanced, things aren't perfect. Memories would not be made if things are expected.

Wonder if this would have any effect on clown masters clothing, or any other giant clothed creature for that matter...

EDIT: After rereading how item degradation works, I'm fairly certain this new armor nerf will affect the above creatures.

I'd imagine maces will be pretty strong now.

It sounds like enemy combatants will actually be properly outfitted in the future which was also another huge problem that is getting fixed. There is a big difference between a load of goblins showing up in loin cloths and real armor. An elite goblin in full iron is no joke.

Looks like weapons are getting the same treatment. Quick guess, this might be a huge nerf to silver weapons, and may make bronze colossi and other tough inorganic monsters all the more dangerous.

Some initial test results:

The material of both the weapon and armour seem to affect the armour's wear, as well as the type of attack. For example, mail shirts don't seem to be damaged by blunt attacks but will be broken by stabs.

Spoiler metals are tough but not indestructible. Even full sets of adamantine would probably be worn down over several sieges, especially if your dwarves can't dodge.

Weapons seem extremely durable by comparison. They also don't appear to be affected by their material properties to the same degree. Both a copper and an adamantine two-handed sword were able to eventually shred through several pieces of adamantine armour while only reaching xWornx damage themselves.

Clothes are also affected, so no more giant dresses of invulnerability.

Someone from another board mentioned adventure mode's soldiers still not wearing armor and such, can this be confirmed?

So stacking multiple cloaks on soldiers no longer helps? :(

The first hearthpeople I saw had full sets. The changelog says they'll wear it "according to their roles" so maybe not every random cannon fodder gets their own armour. I think this was already kind of a thing, with people from poorer nations having to make do with leather or cloth

Oh, they'll still work as protection. You'll just need to replace them more often.
