In response to some (mostly non-gay) people saying the the word "homosexual" is offensive to homosexual people because of the focus on sexual, we made a second word in the Netherlands ages ago, not sure if english has it too: "homophile", to take the focus off sexual activity.
Where homosexual is a contraction of 'homo' (old greek for 'the same') and sexual, homophile is a contraction of 'homo' and 'philos' / 'philein(verb)' (old greek for friend / like, love)

In scientific debate they mean two different things. A homosexual is a homophile that puts his/her sexual preferences to practice, a homophile is someone attracted to the same sex, without nescessarily engaging in sexual activity.

But in practice, outside of academic ivory towers, the latter is rarely used by the LGBT community, it sounds too much like pedophile.
From what I've been told by any gay acquaintances I have, is that they don't mind the term homosexual at all. Just don't call them fag or lesbo, just like Cormack just said.
