Toady mentioned "economy" will be implemented, what exactly does that mean?

Basic economic functions, like currency, rent, purchase and barter of goods within the fortress between dwarves, that sort of thing. Last time it was implemented was.... oh, about 6 years ago, prior to DF2010. It was a complete and total, utterly broken mess that caused a lot more pain than it did fun (or even !!FUN!!, it was just frustrating a lot of the time), which is why it got axed.

Glacial on dwarves being assigned socks:

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

It will be a worldwide economy this time. Wars will be fought over land, peasants will starve in the fields, merchants will travel. Players can be merchants. Will, in all likelihood be completely different from df2010.

And is last of the features on the "short-term"' list. Which means it's several years from implementation probably
