Scoopz Gains Lifeskills
« on: June 15, 2016, 07:47:37 pm »

I have $150 of Amazon gift cards, $150 of Barnes & Noble gift cards, two months left of summer, and a desire to pick up a new hobby. The question is, what am I going to do? My initial thought turns to learning to sew fabric/leather. Other thoughts lead to craft cosplay armor. Or maybe I should just buy some nice shoes and forget it? What do you think, Bay12?

Any suggestions on how to spend this money and gain some appreciable hobby or skill?

I feel like sewing is actually a great life skill to have. I can't count the number of times my mom has been able to save clothes/bags/etc. with her sewing skills after I ripped them.

Good luck with this, I think it's a great idea for using those gift cards!

Definitely take up tailoring, it'll become vital when you decide to become a superhero and need a costume

Thanks people! It looks like I'm off to become a kickass tailor. I did some preliminary searching on Amazon and I've found a quality sewing machine for $80.00, fabric and/or leather of which I would be able to easily purchase a good quantity for anywhere between $20.00-$50.00. The only thing left would be pins and thread.

I should probably pick up some books on sewing from Barnes & Noble.

Any ideas for a first project? I was thinking about making a backpack?

If you want to take up armouring, I suggest looking at the webs before laying out money. armourarchive.org is a fantastic resource (mainly the forum, but also the essays), and there are quite a few others as well.

Sewing is a fantastic life skill too! Probably more fantastic. But I know a lot less about that.

I'd love to get in to armoring at some point too (to really around out my ability to make cooling stuff that one could wear), I just don't have the money/space for it really. Maybe in 2 or 3 years though.

...
if you do actually make something using sewing and/or tailoring, costume or otherwise, I'd like to see the results.

Now for a contrary option: cooking! Practical, healthy, and delicious!

I recommend lasagna. Or, for simplicity, mashed potatoes.

Thanks for the suggestions! Actually, I already do a fair amount of cooking/food-prep, and I assure you I make some delicious stuff.

EDIT: Also, ya, I'll keep the thread updated.

If I can find a recipe somewhere, why not?

Finally ordered my sewing equipment and fabric. Enough Muslin for fitting purposes (I hope) and some stuff to experiment on.

I thought about it for a long time and settled on making a jacket. For around the house and at nerdy parties.

something like a cross between,

(incorporating elements of each, but leaning ultimately more towards Paul Bettany's awesome Knight's tale coat.)

This'll require some more fabric, but it's my first step in fulfilling what has become somewhat of a dream of mine.

Neat. Glad to hear I was able to blink myself out of a haze of vidya gaems long enough to suggest you a good hobby, man.

Practiced my first stitches yesterday. Drew my first pattern today. Hopefully can sew some Muslin tomorrow.

Will post pics soon.
