Most useful defenses
« on: January 30, 2008, 01:21:00 am »

Basically this is a topic for your fortress defenses, even ones you haven't made.

Mine requires a reasonably long corridor:

code:

1- Lever to release war dogs.
2- Lever to open floodgates.
3- Lever to raise/lower front door/bridge.
4- Lever to release soldiers.
5- Lever to raise/lower bridge by defenses.
d- Caged war dog.
D- Door.
^- Trap.
s- Soldiers in this area.
~- Water or magma.
|===|- Front door/bridge.
@- Lever-puller, ready and waiting.
*- Channel. (extended on by bridge)

Sure it's long and complicated, but I guarantee no goblins will survive that.

The water would drown the dogs.

Which is why you use them first and let the water out when they've all been killed distracting the gobbos.

(Entrance)    (shitload of traps)    (fortress)

You don't need anything else.

Simple, effective, but boring.

I don't like using dogs unless they're sure to win...  I'm something of a dog lover...

So, I instead prefer to build extended spike pit traps (simply build drawbridges down both ways of the corridor, so that they funnel enemies that aren't directly over the pit into the dank hole of doom), garbage disposal traps (haven't tried it yet, should be fun), shower traps, and arrow halls.

Mind you, these are all theoretical designs.  I've never built any of them, and I've never had a siege to use them on anyways.

Bah, Fort, ramparts, marksdwarfes, entrance, champions in adamantine armor.

This is a defence, traps are for sissys. only problem is getting them all. they have a nasty habit of fleeing after first contact. After having fought in the shaddows for a while.

Hm, if you built a corridor like this:
code:
 #___#
@#...#@
@#...#@
@#...#@
@#...#@

_=entrance
@=marksdwarf
#=fortification
.=corridor
would the marksdwarves' arrows, if they miss their target, go through the fortification on the other side and possibly kill friendlies?

I mean, traps are LAME. Even if you just dig out one tile of entrance(1 tile too, just example), put there a bridge or something, link to lever, and nobody can get to you.

I usuallt setup something like this:
code:

#-wall _-open space/water/magma  =bridges +-floor
%-fortications  M-marksdwarves S-other soldiers

    ############  ##########
    #M%_________==_________%M#
    #M%________++++________%M#
    #M%________++++________%M#
    #M%________++++________%M#
      #_________==_________#
       #########++#########
             #SSSSSS#

Once the first part of the invasion gets onto the platform you pull a level and both bridges retract stranding the gobbos on the island and they get pin cushioned.  The Soldiers at the other end take care of anything that moves faster then the bridges raise.  I have only seen a small seige, but it was highly effective.

I wonder what would happen to the remains of your enemies if you had two bridges setup like this:
code:

════┼┼════
╔═══╗╔═══╗
║   ║║   ║
╚═══╝╚═══╝
ò☺++++++++ (The lever is linked to both bridges.)

...then gobbos came in, all unprepared and unawares:
code:

════g┼════
╔═══g╔═══╗
║   ║g   ║
╚═══╝╚═══╝
☺+++++++++

SPLAT!
code:

════g┼════
++++╥╥++++
++++║║++++
++++╨╨++++
ó☺++++++++

I don't think you can anchor a bridge on another bridge.

They're not anchored on one another, they're anchored next to one another.
