And those clouds on the ceiling are actually just gouts of black smoke.

The black smoke is from the fireplace thats in the blue wall.

The fireplace, for the architect, represented the sun. The mirror on the pale cream wall represented the moon.

Perhaps the food is for the small orange cat that lies lazily on the floor, basking in the starry night.

The small orange cat gets up and flows over to the door. It bats it open, revealing the rest of the apartment.
