Is there a Pressure Plate -> ? -> Trap
« on: June 08, 2016, 11:28:54 am »

I am planning a pressure plate that triggers an upright spear.

However, I want to be able to stop the spear from being triggered via lever pull, instead of stopping the repeater itself in case of maintenance / emergency?

I plan to use a goblin repeater for this.

Is there a way to make Pressure Plate -> Gear? -> Upright Spear Trap, where the Gear? is linked to a lever to engage / disengage triggering the Upright Spear Trap?

I've done this in the past with using a minecart loop to drive the upright spear repeater.  However, it does require power to drive the minecart loop.

Directly? No.
Even if you could link a gear to relay signals, adding one more OPEN or CLOSE signal from lever would just make the repeater skip a beat, not stop.
However, any system that sends OPEN signal x steps after getting an open signal and CLOSE signal x steps after getting a close signal would work, if you don't mind a little delay.

For using gears in particular, using two pumps could work, with "on" turning one on, pumping water to directly onto a plate in a step with second one off, and on off signal turning the first one off and second one on to dump water back (however, beware that pumps keep working for 49 steps after disengaging the power, iirc).

Alternatively, you could link the gears to max-speed roller to move cart onto a plate in 1-3 steps (depending on cart placement in the tile and whether it is flat or ramp), with different roller to send it back on CLOSE signal.

Non-gear systems, there's numerous options for pushing cart to the edge of a tile and then stopping. Track Stop in particular has same cadence/delay as upright spears, and while you can't easily get one on a ramp, you can have another cart on valid ramp pushing it from behind, ready to bump it off as soon as the track stop is turned off - then you could put a door/floodgate/hatch behind launch system to stop the repeater from sending any more signals.

Or you perhaps could use a door with cart pushed against it by ramp, raring to go downwards onto plate as soon as the door is opened and going around in a small circle stopped with little delay (perhaps reducable with multiple carts) as soon as the door is closed. (If you had the plate and door on length of flat track instead, you'd add 1-step delay to checkpoint through the track the door is on, and then would spend more than 1 step on the plate.)

Alternatively, since you already use it you could link the signals to on-off for water-dropper with plate in the middle, though this has bit of a delay.

I have to check, can a screw pump trigger a signal to upright spear trap(s)?

I am thinking repeater trigger via (1) pressure plate,
sends signal to (2) screw pump_#1 which activates sending signal to (3) gear.

Now if (3) gear is engaged to (4) screw pump_#2, can (4) screw pump_#2 trigger a signal to (5) upright spear trap(s)?

What I usually do is to build a mine cart repeater (impulse ramp driven). A lever opens a hatch to let the mine cart fall through, the cart activates a pressure plate during its travel, and the impulse ramps keep ensuring the cart moves around the track to reactivate the menacing spear trap(s) until the lever is pulled again, at which time the cart returns to rest on the hatch.

As far as I understand, a screw pump cannot activate a menacing spike trap directly. Instead, the trap has to be activated via a link, but screw pump 2 can exert pressure on a second pressure plate that's linked to the trap. I stick to my mine carts, though. It's reasonably simple and hasn't failed me yet (and quite a few FBs have been removed using that method).

Will minecart repeater continue to run when the fortress retires, and an adventurer comes exploring?

I wanted to use long lived goblin and elf repeaters for my up right spikes, so they are randomly linked.  So I wonder if such repeaters will still work when their trap is sealed also, or if they can eventually escape upon fortress retirement.

Iirc retiring a fortress will scatter both items and living beings in it. For that purpose, I guess water repeater could work, albeit water's random nature makes the raising/lowering times inconsistent.

There should be no need for gear assemblies or anything involving power.

My personal solution to the problem can be found here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=145879.msg5828386#msg5828386. It is by no means the best solution to the problem, but it works with comparably small footprint and no power involved.

Abandoning scatters items, retiring doesn't.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.
