War Dogs have gone to the Dogs
« on: June 05, 2016, 11:22:28 am »

I usually put a screen of war dogs on the the entrances to my fortresses. They used to maul the Carp out of thieves and make very good meat shields if a Were-beast or an ambush turns up. Except a siege recently turned up and a goblin jumped the wall and landed, one armed, in the dog pen, and they didn't react. It even started laying into one of the dogs and reading the reports it didn't even fight back. What the hell is going on? Why are these dogs now useless?

They also all seem distracted? is this a cause of their newfound pacifism? Is there anyway I can cure them of distraction, or at least mod it out in the raws?

Hi,

You may want to upload a save (showing the war dog distraction, at a minimum) to the DFFD and post a link here.  As far as I can tell, that sounds like the same bug.

My dogs also frequently do nothing when strangers show up.  I've seen keas thread their way through a pasture of 20 dogs to reach my trap line, and the animals usually don't react to kobold thieves.  Wolves are the same.

Every now and again, however, they will viciously attack these things.

Mine don't have to be distracted for this to occur, but guard animals have been so bizarre since I started playing the game that I thought it was normal.

I know that my grizzly bears head out and start mauling anything that gets close and isn't friendly, but they aren't distracted yet.

Cave crocodiles will as well. Very nice pets with all the eggs and high value. I used a large bridge that I lowered quickly with masterwork mechanics so that the goblins fell 10z levels. At the side of the bottom where my tame cave crocodiles who simply ate the ones that survived.

Yeah, whatever update introduced the new combat levels broke dogs and war dogs in particular very badly.

I'm starting to think it's because dogs don't have the LARGE_PREDATOR tag. That might be the tag now responsible for having grizzlies and other trained critters attack hostiles rather than standing there doing nothing.
