Good morning wasteland. I just have to get this power armor upstairs.
Then I'm marching back to Sanctuary once more. One of these days I'll have enough resources to use fast travel every time. But that day isn't here just yet. I don't have the oil.
This new settler has a nice survivors vest that gives an extra 8 points of armor protection. Yes please!
After processing my junk and making a few bullets I'm ready to head down again. This time I have some fuel prepared for the return trip.
It's already late when I get down, so I stay the night at the dugout inn.
Day 51. A bit of weapon trading in the morning.
And now I'm heading east. I think its finally time to see if I can't visit Goodneighbour. I've never visited there in any character, so I'm pretty excited. I finally get to see new content!
There's a shootout with a few raiders along the way, but otherwise smooth sailing to Boston Common.
There's a few super mutants about though, and I don't know exactly how to get there. Hmmm..
Poking about I run into a guy running a bar....
[Rant] It's been a while, but I feel compelled to complain about Bethesda again here. Alright, so what is this guy doing here? Is he supposed to be comic relief? Because he isn't funny. Why would anybody run a bar in the middle of what is effectively a war zone? There are super mutants and raiders mere meters away. This kind of disregard for immersion/realism really gets to me. It's so oddly sloppy given how much effort they clearly put into crafting the ruins and the world. My hope is that they learn a thing or two from games like the Witcher III, so when we get a new engine and a new game they actually try and make the human world make sense. This goes for Diamond City, and Goodneighbour too. The surrounding area is so hostile as to practically constitute a siege like situation, but at the same time the NPC world doesn't care or notice this. NPCs act as though a person can simply walk from one town to the next, while in reality that would be suicide. It all just works towards ruining the illusion that the whole world doesn't simply exist for the sake of the player. It's a real shame, because when modded I actually enjoy this game a lot more than the Witcher III. [/Rant]
And a few seconds later raiders are shooting at me from the rooftop of a nearby parking lot. Great place for a bar mate!
I fight my way up the building to the roof. It gets a little bit tense but the power armor protects me enough. I get a few guns and some ammo for my trouble, and a bit of an overview of the surrounding area. There's a few ghouls to take out down below, which is some more easy xp.
I think I have the route figured out. Predictably, I can't simply walk there. Bethesda has to have the one entrance to the town be under siege by super mutants. Except of course, they arent actually "under siege". The super mutants are just there. Because.... fuck you. That's why.
I manage to take one out, but the legendary guy is too tough. I have to run for it. Luckily the town entrance is where I thought it would be. Finally!
I meet the "mayor".
Do a little trading.
And start some quest to help somebody steal something. I have no idea what or from who. But I did get to shoot a few mirelurks.
The "mayor" gives everybody a pep speech about how the body-snatching institute are the real threat. Hmm... guys... Super mutants? Hello? Right outside your front door? Cutting off all access to the outside world? No? Not a real problem?
I'm quite liking Goodneighbour though. It's more like what a Fallout settlement should be like. Diamond City by comparison feels to strangely law abiding and upright, given the lack of any real source of strength or authority. Somehow a single mayor character and a bunch of guards have everything in control over there? On the basis of what laws or rules...? No idea. But at least its obvious how Goodneighbour is being run, and on what basis, and by who. This is what I like to see. Its almost like a town in the original fallouts.
I meet a guy who used to be in the Gunners. He wants 250 caps to be my companion. No thanks buddy.
And I visit the Memory Den place, or whatever it's called.
Happy memories. When I finally track this guy down I sure hope his arm is a piece of armor I can take and wear for my own self. It looks awesome. But it probably isn't....
A bit of XP there. I'm on my way to level 23.
And I meet the ghoul who wishes the Silver Shroud was real. I give him the outfit I got in the comic store. And agree to play the part. Because I am an idiot.
I go ahead and track down the first bad guy.
He is a bit tough, so I rely on a bottlecap mine to finish him off.
He has a neat weapon on him though. A scoped .45 rifle. Why not.
Then it's time to get some sleep in the hotel. I meet up with the Vault-Tec representative ghoul guy and tell him to go to Sanctuary.
Day 52, and it's time to get out of here and get my power armor repaired. Drop off some scrap, what have you. But bad news. The legendary super mutant is camping directly outside. This is an example of where the "die as little as possible" rule breaks down. When the game forces you into a position where you -have- to try and brute-force your way through somehow. I can't fast travel out, so there really is no escape. I don't have much in the way of drugs, so I give it a few tries (and die a bunch), all to no avail (of course I'm not counting any deaths here either!). So... what to do. What to do. If I really have to I guess I can cheat my way past this with some console commands, maybe temporarily enable fast travel, but there must be some way.
Turns out that there are three locked warehouses in Goodneighbour, each filled with triggermen. Maybe there is a quest associated with them, but I blast through all three, wiping out a good 20 or so of them. They actually aren't as tough as the ones in the vault where the private detective is I think. I can take most of them out with my 10mm, which I still have a bunch of ammo for. Doing so nets me enough xp to level up, and heaps of loot.
Level 23. I go with another point in Life Giver. I now slowly re-gain health over time. Sweet.
Selling all the triggerman clothes gets me cash to buy chems for fighting with. Why hello there. Yes I just happen to have 20 fedoras and 20 pairs of slacks to sell you. And these tommy guns. Oh. -That blood? I'm sure it will come out in the wash.
With some psycho, med-x, jet, and the help of the mercenary I hire with the caps I've made, I can take on the super mutant and win. Just.
Sorry dude. I don't have any stimpacks.
There's a super mutant still blocking my way home, but he was already pretty wounded. OK, let's get going. I head right to Hangmans alley to get to my bike.
Day 53. I've biked it up with the fuel I had on me. I do some much needed repairs on the power armor. Unfortunately I went and left the arms on the merc.... Darnit.
It's still early. But I'm pretty wounded, and have all sorts of diseases and chem addictions. Time for sleep.
Goodnight, wasteland.(It's been 53 days since I left the vault. I'm level 23. I have been "heavily wounded" 7 times.)
