My Dwarf Fortress Youtube Series
« on: June 03, 2016, 03:32:11 pm »

Didn't know where exactly to post this, so I just threw it here.
I'm only three episodes in but I'd love for people to name my dwarves and give advice about what I should do.

I also do another game but that's a different story.

Channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/Sollision
DF Playlist - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJR74dtzRdeek6FGfRKBvu2VPmKw7kwn3
Episode One - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc6Voh_EZw4

I'd love to have more subscribers and support to my channel. :)

I think that the idea of a LP for DF is intriguing, but have yet to see it pulled off in a manner worth watching.

I would try to make your videos less about the pondering that goes on while you plan things out, and more about the results of your construction. Unless you're developing an intricate minecart railsystem or some complex magma-trap, where you spend a lot of time discussing the use of exploits and "hidden mechanics" in it's creation, it's just not very interesting to watch a fairly standard fortress come to fruition. Try to teach us something unique with every minute you record!

Along with that, I would love to see someone focus on the character relationships and really draw out some of the strange networks that form inside your fortress. Like, your head doctor is married to your mayor, who was recently maimed in a goblin siege, and now the doctor won't leave her side. A little roleplay / storywriting goes a long way.

Summarizing combat logs after showing us the real-time fighting is a good idea, too.

Of course, I'm old enough that I don't quite understand the appeal of lengthy and meandering videos about someone else's experiences with a game I could be playing myself, so take this criticism lightly.

Yes, thanks for this! I haven't experimented much with any "hidden mechanics" but I'll look forward to learning some and sharing them.

Character relationships and whatnot are one of the main reasons I got absorbed into Dwarf Fortress; I thought it was amazing on how each one had their own feelings about everyone and everything. What do you think if I did a little "Reality Check" at the end of each episode explaining what's going on in the fortress? :)

Definitely was going to do the combat log summaries too! :D
